The business men of Horace say they will make this Fourth of July celebration the biggest ever held in the county.

There is a meeting held in city hall every few nights to dis cuss and plan interesting features for that day. It takes money to make a big celebration like this a success. So far the business men of both Tribune and Horace have been very liberal in contributing "time" as well money toward a big time on the Fourth. All committees have done their part, consequently no one has been over worked and the whole thing has been gotten up with but very little trouble. A splendid Biblo class was or ganized at the Y.

In the past a certain class of 'jaw breakers" have been permitted to come into town, do just as they pleased, then get up and leave without being bothered.

This has gone on until the people (of Horace have gotten tired of it. They are now taking steps toward a better city govern merit by electing officers that will enforce the laws. That jail Is go ing to cost soma monty und it will take several fines to pay for it, so let the first man that would like to contribute to it, start something and Judge Powell will finish it. Withdrawal The editor of the Republican has concluded to draw out of the race for the nomination for lieutenant governor, in deference to the wishes of a great many friends of his in all parts of this senatorial district. He announces his withdrawal in the following letter to Hon. Alfred Pratt of Syracuse: Tribune, Kansas, June 22, 1910. Hon. Alfred Pratt, Syracuse.

Kansas. Dear Captain Pratt: I am in receipt of your letter of the 15th suggesting that I ought to withdraw from the race for lieutenant governor because of the fact that I am already a senator from- this for two more years and that if I should resign it might complicate matters considerably in the election of my successor. As your letter is right in line with the same- suggestion that has been made by tnaaydther good friends of mine, in all parts of the district, I have concluded to gef out of the race, and tais letter to you will be an answer to the other letters I have received on the subject. I know full well what I owe to this big district Which gave me such a splendid vote two years ago, and I know also that you at correct in saving that it would hardly be possible to nominate a man as my successor who is so closely identified or so much interested in the extreme western part of the district, ha I. am.

Next year is the regular year for apportionment, under tha constitution, and if there is any show for it I have no doubt that an effort will he made to cut off some of the representatives given to this district by the' legislature of Any such attempt, ot course, must be defeated, and in addition the legisla ture ot mi will be asked to make a new apportionment for senatorial dis' tricts cutting down the inequality that makes several counties of less than 23,000 population each, separate sen atorial districts while this big district with eighteen counties, and the district just north of thirteen counties, each with abont 85,000 population, have no more power, in the senate than the smaller -districts, I believe I. will be in better position to accomplish this than a new man. particularly one from the east part of the district, and while it has long been an ambition of mine to be lieutenant governor of Kansas, yet in view of fact that many sincere friends in the district believe, like yourself, that I ought not to glye up my position at this time, I am not going to file' my petitions for the nomination. Tomorrow is the last day for filing and I have my petitions all ready and have matters in such shape I believe I could muke this nomination, notwith standing -there, are two other candl dates for it. My petitions come from counties and contain over 2300 names and in every case they hove been circulated by personal and inti mate friends who are closely in touch with political matters in their com munities.

I have had the strongest assurances of support from men of in fluence from both factions, in all parts of the state and everywhere I have found a- strong disposition among the republicans who do the voting in the country precincts to set down oh this factional fighting which is endangering the success' of 'the re publican party, Hut this is over now and I can say, with J'hn Ingalls who was asked if he as a candidate, that I am not a candidate, not now.
