Although every one has been feeling disappointed in not having Miss Woosler in the Institute, her work has been kept up with reasonable satisfaction with the exception of drawing, which had to be omitted. John McDonald, editor of the Western ScOool Journal published at Topeka, delivered a lecture on "Robert Burns" at the M. K.

church Wednesday evening. The Ministerial Association of the Northwest Kansas Confer ence of the M. E. church will be held in Sharon Springs October 19th, 20th and 21st. This will bring to Sharon Springs a num ber of the brightest men in west ern Kansas the preachers, and they should be given a hearty welcome.

Tin-: Times will publish the program later. A heavy rain storm swept over Wallace county Monday evening, and before 10 p. m. a half mile of railroad track over Pond creek was swept away, and passenger train No. 1 slowed up just in time to avoid a fearful wreck.

The section foreman went over the track just after the storm and there, was no sign of trouble at Pond creek, but the water came with a mighty rush that swept the track a hunred yards down stream. Engineer Chapman, of No. 3, had slow orders and he discovered the washout just in time to avoid an accidents The track was repaired by Tuesday evening and trains are now running- on their usual time. Easterbrook, master me chanic of the Union Pacific shops at Ellis, was snot and instantly- killed by William Leach Monday evening. Lcacn naa been cm-ployed in the water supply department but was recently dis charged. Once before he had been discharged and through the efforts of Mr. Easterbrook was re instated. At the time of the shooting Leach, was in a beastly state of intoxication.

Mr. Easterbrook; was just leaving the station to go to his home when Leach. began shooting. Five shots took effect in Easterbrook's body, and he died almost instantly. Leach was arrested and taken to Salina for fear he would be lynched.

Grandpa Corder talks of mov ing to Rexford in the near future. The following have fine fields of corn: John Arkebauer, Squire Mather, Wm. Dunn, John Hays, Roy Johnston, T. L. Coen, Sam Johuston, Thomas Waggle, and C.

E. Martin. School will commence in district 36 on the first Monday in September, also on the same date in the West Hope district. Holmborg- is a candidate for renomination for county treas urer. He will have no opposition jn the convention and very little in the election. Engineer Ward, who was kill ed in the wreck near Byers two weeks ag-o, was the engineer who broke a record, in pulling- the Dc- Wolf Hopper train from Denver to Topeka last spring-. Wasson's pupils have been very (i. TVJ interesting, and the contest Fn- day night will be no exception to the rule. J. M. DeTilla, who lives on the banks of Pond creek just south of the washout, had three horses and two cows drowned in the flood Monday night.

Besides the loss of his horses and cows, Mr. DeTilla had a promising field of corn which was practically ruined. Col. Jerome A. Paddock died at the county hospital in Denver July 29th, and was buried in the potter's field.

He was at one time manager of Anna Eva Fay, the spiritualist, and was well known in theatrical circles. Drink got the better of him and he died penniless. He left Sharon Springs Denver about ten. months ago. Ior ucuvt-1 A signt caictuaxeu.

The physics class has been having some interesting discussions of the nature to probe to the bottom the subject under consideration. Stryker insists on asking absurd and unreasonable examination questions which have been the downfall of a large number of Kansas teachers, and to even, matters up the Hays Republican puts the following knotty questions at Supt. Stryker: You can any day see a white horse, why do you oever see a white colt? Why does a horse eat back ward and a cow forward? Why does a hop vine wind one way and a bean vine another? Where should the inside of the chimney be the bigger, at the top or bottom, and why? Why do leaves turn upside down just before a rain? What is the length of a flour barrel?
