With this ire-me closes the iirst cjuartcr of the Iirst year of the Eaui.b' existance. Thirteen weeks ng printed the Iirst Wkhstku the lirwt paper ever printed in tho town, and wo are triad to confess that notwithstanding the difilciilties usually encountered in starting a new Daoer, we aro prosperinc Our sub scription lit has rapidly grown over 500; our advcitisiii" has in creased three-fold, and we are estal lishcd oi) a more vol it basis. To the people of Webster find vicinity we owe all this. When we Iirst started the Eai.k we made po prom ises but what has so far begn strictly fulfilled. We, will start out the first of the new year with the best paying newspaper property in the county.

all due tt the fact that Webster and surrounding country is made up the most enterprising class of people in the state. Three months ago. when we first came to Webster, some hooted at tho idea of printing a aper in so small a town as it then was "Then" tho town only tamed live houses, three stores, ano each of them consisted of only one cart load of goods apiece, one black smith shop and about 20 inhabitants "Axu now." after three months we have two of tho finest dry goods and grocery stores in this part of the state, none excepted, two grocery stores, one drug store and will have the second one bv Deo. 15th, two blacksmith and wagon shops, two good livery stables, one billiard hall, one lumber yard, one meat market, two hotels, one newspaper, two feed mills, one doctor, one preacher, thrco land agents, and best of all, no law yers, and about 200 inhabitants, and can boast of being the second town in size in Rooks couuty, with good prospects of being tho hrst. this is all due to tho fact that our citizens enterprising and in every way help to advance Webster and vicin ity.

No town in northwest Kansas has as bright a future before it as this "Magic city of the Solomon," Webster. Before twelve months the Mo. Pacific railroad will be running trains to and from it, then the con ductor will cry out Webster, the 'Magic city of the Solomon. Pen cannot trace the past, human tongue cannot express its glorious HOW TO HVII.D VP A TOWS Talk about it. Write about it.

Help to improve it. Speak well about it. Beautify the streets. Patronize its merchants. Advertsse in its newspapers.

Elect good men to all tho offices. Speak well of its public-spirited, enterprising citizens. If you are rich, invest in some thing; employ somebody; be a "hustler." If you don't think of anything good to say about it, don't say any thing bad. Kemember that every dollar you invest in a permanent improvement is that much on interest. Be corteouft to strangers that come among you, so mat tuey go away with good impressions.

Always cheer on the men that go in for improvements; your portions of the cost will be nothing only what is lust. Don't kick on any proposed neces sary improvement because it is not at your own door. Don't throw stumbling blocks the way of your town ofiicers; they are ireneraflv public-spirited men and spend much of their time in the jubhe interest for which they re- cive no remuneration. If during the week anything of mblic interest has happened which might appear in print to the credit of the eoiiiunity, tell it to the newspaper office so that it may be seen by the outside world. Kansas is a land of fniits and flowers. There are orchards everywhere, every farm has its peach orchard; they are perfectly healthful; know not the blight that comes to the famous orchards of Michigan and Maryland, and, grows a fruit that would delight the sense of a connc-issiur. Apples are doingwell; pears are fine; the apricot, almond and nectarine flourish; the grapo is as much at home as it is on the Pacific slope. I never saw a country where fruit came sooner into bearing or more easily grown than here. The flowers are ns universal as reaching savanahs.

The prairie is the great (rod's conservatory and blossom into beauty from April to the golden Octobci days; The wayfarer isses wilii delighted seii'cs over leagues bloom and breathed nn atmofphpre balmy and sweet with as the "Garden of the Gods." A NebrasKa man has settled the question of hov prairie dogs obtain the water they drink. He says thay dig their own well, each village having one with a concealed opening. He knows of one such well 200 feet deep, having a circular staircase leading down to the water. We will M-agerthat the Nebraska man dosen't know any such thing. A darkey talking with a friend on the subject of answered prayers was asked if the Almighty always answered his prayers.

He replied that it depended entirely on how he worded hia petition. He said: "If I ask the lord to send me a turkey I won't get it, if I ask him. to send me after a turkey I always get one before daylight." The noted democratic orator and former divine, Henry Clay Dean, will Hpeak in Kirwin, November 27 and :0. Mr. Dean was chaplain of the U.

S. senate during' Buchanan's administration if our memory is not at fault. We have had the pleasure of hearing him speak and consider him one of the finest orators of the west. News. Notwihstanding the publication of articles in Illinois and Indiana newspapers, to, the effect that Kansas is a grasshopper-ridden state, where cyclones and hnrricanes hold full sway, and where starvation stalks aiound leaving missery and wretchedness in its path, immigration continues to pour in by the car load and wagon load, and the western half of this state, that was a barren waste ten' years' ago, is now settled by intelligent and thrifty people and the state is teeming with its millions of wealth and prosperity.
