He instructed the lodge in the secret work and made a happy talk "for the good of the order." It was a very pleasant social affair all around and it may not be out of place to state that the grand foreman is one of the lolliest fellows on earth. Mr. King was one of the founders of the Pratt County Press, the first newspaper ever published in Pratt county, and Eddie was just twenty-one years old at the time of the accident. He was the pride of his parents and had grown to be a young Mrs.

Mary E. Brown, of Hamilton county, Kansas, died in this city last Tuesday evening under extremely sad circumstances. It has been a week or more since a "movers" wagon came in trom the west and camped in the west part of town and it was learned by several who live in that neighborhood that the woman was sick. As soon as It became known that a stranger was In their midst who needed assistance the good Samaritans of Pratt began to look after her welfare, and it was found that the family, consisting of husband, wife and three children, were In very poor circumstances and the mother was seriously ill with bowel trouble and fever. Since that time many friends have tried to smooth the rough journey of life by their kind attentions and the endeavor society of the Presbyterian church appointed a committee who secured some of the delicacies which the husband was unable to provide on account of lack of money.

Dr. Everson took the patient under treatment but despite all labors on her behalf, death entered the little family group and the spirit of the gentle mother passed away, leaving her little ones to mourn their Joss, among strangers in a strange land. About ten o'clock last Sunday night the fire-bell rang out the warning of a blaze, which was discovered to be In W. F. Pitzer's barn. The fire company soon made their appearance and after a half hour of hard work succeeded in suppressing the flames. The fire originated in a coal shed adjoining the barn on the north 'and some think was the work of an incendiary.

From the coal house the fife was soon into the hayloft over the stable and the entire roof was In flames when the boys began throwing water. The roof of the barn is ruined, but the framework was damaged but very little. Dr. Franklin had a box of medical books in the hayloft which are practically ruined. There was no insurance on barn or contents.

The fire company and Superintendent Hogg, of the water works, are each to be commended for their prompt service. In less than five miuutes from the time the bell rang the pumps were working at the engine house and It was only by the quick work of all parties concerned that a big blaze was averted. crops and hard times were compelled to come east in search of work.
