The body of Leslie Stilwell a boy twelve years old was found about eight miles south of Scott City yesterday, lie hact gone out to picket some ponies and in some way became entangled in the ropes and the ponies became frightened and dragged him to death.

A Mr. Smith, of Winona, while- out hunting one day last week found tu? body of a fine looking, heavily built, miJdle aged man in a dug-out with a bullet iiolo through his brain. He is supposed to" have killed himself, as weapons wre found on his person, and but three cents in money. The republican platform says, "Reduce the letter postage to one cent." Would that reduction help the laboring man, mechanic or farmer? Would it not rather help the rich banker or the corporations who write hundreds, of letters daily? The lottery men, the green goods men, real estate men or lawyers would reap more benefits from it than the poor man who rarely write letters. Yet the republican party jsf the friend of the poor man.

Decrease of debt during month, $14, 429, 503; Decrease since June 30th. 1887, Total available for reduction of debt $348,979, 071. Total cash in the tresury, as shown by treasurer's general account, Here is a wail irom juniors Troy Chief, a staunch republican journal published at Kansas; "To 6um up the situation, the with drawal of Blaine has demoralized the republican forces jti6t at tho critical time. All the percentages arc favor of the re-election of Cleveland, and if he falls, it will be through an unusual amount of blun dering by his party. If Cleveland is re-elected, he will carry with him a majority in the house and gain e- nough to make the senate democrat ic.

Then the democratic party will have full sway. Texas will be di vided into several states and demo cratic territories will be admitted; the results of republican rule will be wiped out as fast as possible and the country will be set back to the status of 1860. Democracy will be established in power for a series of years and the republican party will be numbered with tho things that were. This will be the result of a democratic victory the coming tall, and all signs point to that end." Very few people nowadays can be frightened by the cry of "free trade." There never can be free trade while government revenues shall be raised by a tariff on imports, and the only question to be consider ed is: Shall necessary revenue re duction be made by lowering the tariff taxes to 40 per cent, or by raising them to a point that will be practically prohibitory on many im ports? The former plan would keep he tax money in tb people's pock ct, the latter would take it from them and bestow -it, with, additional bounties, upon a few men who profit of the artificial raising of prices by titans of high dutiss. To remove the revenue tax on whiskey, as has soberly proposed in tho republican platform, would cheapen an article of' which the inordinate nse is recognized an unmixed evil.

It would bo a 6trange perversion of the powers of government if legislators should thus render crime easy and clear the way for national fortune. Gazette. FLATTERING PROSPECTS. XtteEansai Crop Reports Show a Oheer-in Prospect for thd present Season. Topeka, July 3.
