Worden both prominent citizens of Syracuse are in the city to day. Miss Bessie McCoy is in the city the guest of Mrs. T. F. Beck.

We mention incidentally that Mr. C- P. Pierce is also stopping there most of the time. Frank Wilcox received a telegram from Scott City Monday evening calliug him to that place. Frank thought it a pleasure to go on that particular night.

Can any one guess why? W. D. Reed, of Louisville, a former resident of Tribune, was among the arrivals on Tuesday morning's train. He will spend some time in western Kansas whero he has large interests, mostly in Leoti, Wichita county. Miss Mason, a lady from Illinois, ar rived in this city Friday last, and after purchasing a tree elaini in this county from C.

G. Wilson returned to her home. Land is coming in demand again, both 1 government and deeded. Miss Laura Anderson left Monday night for a visit among relatives in Black Rock, Arkansas. From thence she will go to Terre Haute and Clinton, Indiana, and will be absent about three months.

Reports from Reid are to the effect that some of her most prominent citizens were on a "high" on last Satuiday night, and made "Rome howl" for a time in such a manner that they were all promptly arrested next day for being "drunk and disorderly." This emanating from a city that not long ago prided herself on the sobriety and decorum of her citizens so much so as to make this a pica that the Baid city should recieve the support of the U. P. colony, who were advised not to come to "Horrid Horace" on account of the society here. The only reason the people of Reid has not been heard from before in thus letting their natures be known is caused by the fact that not until recently have they had a drug store and "ardent" could not be procured in sufficient quantities, as to overflow the town as on this occasion. This then, viz: Reid, is the "moral" town of Greeley county, is it? On being arraigned be fore a justice the aforesaid m.

Items from 17-41. Mrs. Stowell and Miss Walters were pleasant callers on Airs. Parish, last week. Mrs.

Parish has a choice collection of plants, some of them double geraniunts in full bloom, looking very beautiful. The colored gentleman that is laboring for Mr. Walker is forming a residence on the northwest quarter of section 21. James Wagner has a large orchard set out on his farm te fruit trees, small fruit which are all in a fine growing con dition. Ralph Umphrey, of 17-41, had the misfortune of having a horse hurt yery bad during the late thunder 6torm.

What remains a mystery, is whether the horse was hurt plunging with fright or struck by lightning. The farmers around us here in Greeley county seem to be mak'ng great preparations for their future homes here, they find a few little expenditures to be made at once which call for an outlay, but a small amount judiciously handled will go a ways, until his returns for the season'6 work comes in, then living carefully and progressing slowly at first and In a few years heL'will be surprised-If he but figures up his worldly possessions, in a few years every farmer who has taken land here and stayed by us will be prospering and doing well and contented with his lot. His land cost him no money beyond the expenses for filing papers, and by careful management he has accumulatedstock, turned the soil and has a small revenue coming in. Railroads approaching from either side, building up towns too numerous to men tion, his land is constantly inproving and enhancing in value and at the end of five years at the utmost, from to-day his land will be worth a jile of money, according to the amount he improves it. Fellow farmers, can we do so well and lay away as much by working on wages in some over populated communities, besides ore we not our own master? We have not one half the disadvantages here to contend with that early settlers had in some new countries.

There has been considerable wind this week so far, making it somewhat disagreeable. Circulating Library at Bloodgood's book store. All the reading you can do In a year for two dollars. Towner, Hold and Stuart, Kandsj and Colorado towns, Sunday. To Mr. and Mrs. C. Ward, Tuesday May 13th, 1888, a son.

Chet did not make his appearance at his place of business at all yesterday, probably attending to his new duties as papa, and circulating a box of cigars. A young man from Kentucky was taken in custody Thursday last by Lew Cretcher, deputy sheriff for this county, on a charge of seduction in that state. He was on Sunday banded over to the officers of Hamilton county who removed him to Syracuse, Hawkins, "of the Hold Republican, tells us we publish "barefaced lies" in saying in a recent issue that the landlord at He id sent over to Horace last Saturday for one dollars worth of steak (not "stake," as Joe says) to do over Sunday. Not meaning any slur at your "genial landlord" at all, but we can prove that such Is the fact. Under other charges than that of "publish such barefaced lies." we would not think what appeared In the IUpublican worthy of notice.

The Lecture. Mrs.

Fannie E. Rustall, President of the W. C. T. U.

of Kansas, delivered a lecture last night at the city hall to an appreciative Rudicnce. The subject. Temperance, though an old one, was handled in good style, many good and new ideas being brought out. All were well pleased with the entertainment. CIRCULATING LIBRARY.

O. L. Taylor, of the -firm of C. W. Bloodgood is making efforts to establish a circulating library in this city and should be aided in the cause as much as possible by all.

Subscribe for admis sion to the library, and make it a profit to yourself as well as a plsasure. Call this week and get a book free. Opposite past office. The new church was begun Monday morning and when completed will grace the west part of town in fine style, being according to plans, the finest church building in the county. This is a move ill the right direction, and our citizens showed much enterprise in subscribing so freely to such au object.

It is something that has been needed in this city for a long time, and will fill a long felt want. Bold Burglar b. The store of F. Logan at Reid was broken into by burglars on last Friday night, and goods to the amount of about 1300.00 taken. The post-office is also in the same building and letters, papers, were found next morniug scattered all over the floor.

The thieves seemed well acquainted with the premises, as only the high priced goods were taken. No clue has been found of the perpetrators. A man has been sent by the postal authorities to investigate the robbeiy of the post-office, although no monies were secured. The supreme court, on last Saturday, issued a pre-emtory writ commanding Sheriff Mills, of Hamilton county, to is sue a procliraation at once, calling an e-lection for the permanent location of the county seat ot that county. The election held last May, which resulted in favor of Coolldge for permanent county seat, was set aside by the court.

Thus again our sister c6unty on the south will soon be engaged in a new contest. The county lines being now established, and Syracuse being nearest the center and the largest town will, and ought to be, made the permanent county 6eat, her rivals being at the cast and west sides of the county, which would inconvenience man should either be selected for county seat. The Campflre at Tribune. On last Saturday an old soldiers' campflre was celebrated at Tribune according to announcement, and was participated in by a goodly number fiom all parts of the county. The band from this place went over at 1 o'clock in the afternoon and discoursed some martial and patriotic music, with the aid of some of Tribune's talent.

The G. A. li. boys had a meeting at the church in the afternoon, and the crowd was entertained in some degree by horseracing and other amueements. The campfire proper be gun in the evening, a bright light being made by combustibles at the intersection of the principal streets.

Speeches were made and "chicken stories" told by a number, after which a dance was held in a new building near, at which all seemed to enjoy themselves. The feature of the dance was the "Veterans Quadrille," and some of the old battle scarred soldiers seemed to grow young again. Possibly it was the beans, bacon and coffee of which they had partaken that was the cause of their good spirits, but all seemed to enjoy the dance, whatever the cause, which was not the music we are well able to state. At 12 o'clock the crowd dispersed and the campfire was at an end. Horace, Ivaxsas, Mat 15th, 18S8.
