Each succeeding day and week adds materially to the prospects of abundant harvests throughout western Kansas the coming season. This prospect is governed exclusively by the amount of rain-fall during the early spring months. Tfiis morning the entire state iu ploddin through mud up to its boot tops, as a result of the Saturday and Sunday rain. A gentle, steady shower began to fall Saturday, and with but few intermissions continued until this (Monday) morning. It came lowly and thoroughly saturated the ground as it fell.

The comparatively mild winter has brought winter wheat through looking as well as it ever did at this time of year. The warm weather of the past week has caused it to take root and assume a verdant appearance, ready for the spring rains, which have now set in in earnest. If nothing happens, the wheat harvest of 18S8 will be the largest in Kansas for years. Corn planting lias been begun with a vim, and the acreage this year. will be exceptionally large, because farm ers look for a heavy crop.
