government authority desires to know the correct name of the Kaw or Kansas river. The name seems to have been derived from the varied pronunciations given it by the Indi808. Canceas, Cansez, Kansez, Canzas, Okanie, Kansies, Canses, Canzon, Konza, Konzas, Kasas, Kanzans and by other names having like phonetic expression. From these have come the legal recognition of the present orthography. In the language of the Kansas tribe the word "Kansas" signified "smoky" and the south fork of the river, the name of which is now in question, is still known as the Smoky Hill river, it is by many held that the true name of the river is Kansas.

The Kaw or Kansas riven is formed by the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers, and from the point of confluence it flows east about 150 miles to the Missouri. The Smoky Hilt and the Kaw, or Kansas, having names of the same meaning it is claimed that the one is but the continuation of the other. Lewis and Clark in 1801 spoke of the Kanzas river, governmeut maps in 1819 called it the Kansas and another publication in called it the Canzas. in 1854 steamboats were advertised for the Kansas Kansas City (Kan.)
