Hoaglin Sparks. There is a petition being circulated requesting the city council to buy the Opera House, move it on or near the square and convert it into an auditorium. This petition seems to be meeting with great favor among our citizens, there having been up to the present time but two persons who have refused to sign it. Of course any public enterprise is bound to meet with some opposition. There always has been and always will be cranks and kickers; they cannot help it, they are born that way.

And by the way, did you ever observe the fact that the hardest kickers of public enterprises are the ones who pay the least taxes? We believe this to be an excellent move and should meet the approval and assistance of every citizen who has the welfare of the city at heart. We need a convention hall of some description, and no better nor more adequate building could be found for the purpose. It has a seating capacity greater than any building in the county and is adapted in every way for the use to which it will be put. It can be used for a general purpose building, opera house, convention hall, in fact a general assembly hall, and be made to yield a revenue to the city instead of being a "white elephant," as one of the two kickers expressed it. With the expenditure of a very little money it can be moved, repaired and put in first class condition.

And the city has ample means to buy and make this a public building the city can well be proud of, and the city would then never be embarrassed for a suitable place to accommodate large gatherings, which would surely occur should some individual purchase and convert it into a store room or for some other private use. We say buy it by all means, as it is a worthy enterprise, a few chronics to the contrary not-withstanding. The expression of the taxpayers is nearly unanimous in regard to the matter, and should there be any kicking done, these are the ones to do it, and not the fellows who are not interested to the amount of 5 cents either way. We are in receipt of a program for the Kansas Musical Jubilee, to be held in Hutchinson, May 31, and June 1, 2 and 3.

These annual entertainments have in the past been the finest in the way of musical entertainments of anything in Kansas, or the west. The management assures the public that the coming jubilee will surpass all former entertainments. Prof. Root of Chicago has been secured fer the occasion, and will give daily drills in voice culture and chorus singing. Prof.

Spencer will give rtcit als as last year. Mrs. Ada M. Sheffield, a well known saprano soloist ef Chicago and Mr. Spencer Robinson, a tener soloist of the same city, have been engaged for the entire festival.

The charac ter of these entertainments is too well known in this vicinity to require any comments from us- It only being necessary to advise our citizens of the dates. The railroads all make a sptciai reduced rate for the occasion, and we expect to see a large delegation of St. John people attend. S. LiE.
