XlsT Furnished Without Delay I Office in Room 5, County Building, scription? The Chicago Lumber Company hare closed up their business at Harper and Attica. The Ballew company has al so discontinued their yard at the latter point There are eighteen criminal and one hundred and forty-four civil cases on the Docket for the present term of the District court. Tudee Herrick has a Herculean task before him, it sesms to us, One of the best things Rev.

Sam. Jones ever said is the following: "The most beautiful sight in the world is to see a family around a cheerful fire, with the head of the family reading from his local newspaper- which he had paid for in advance." Active steps are being taken by sev eral gentlemen in Kiowa, interested in the preservation of game, to have the wholesale slaughter of prairie chickens, curlew, and plover, stopped. An organization wffl be made, and moral suasion tried to see, if at least during the breeding season, the birds can not be given a Journal Hazelton has her new steam roller mill in successful operation, and the people of our neighboring city are justly proud of the enterprise. All will readily agree that a good mill will do more to draw trade to a town and build up the business, than any other and if Sharon were to secure an enterprise of this character there would soon be a wonderful increase of trade noticable. Let us have a mfll by all means.

We are pleased to learn that type foundry is soon to be established at Wichita. We say. we are glad of this because those fellows at Kansas City and Louis- have reaped such a harvest from the newsp4per men of Kansas, that they have become very arrogant, and it is almost as much as a man's life is worth to ask a favor of them. Asjfor as we are concerned our mite in this line shall go to the Wichita house. The Anthony Republican claims to preach Republican doctrine, pure and undefiled, but we notice that its editor, A.

Lindsay, is making a fight on Governor Martin, and accuses him of trickery in connection with de signating county seats of some of the newly organized counties. Perhaps Bro. L. is personally interested in some matter of this kind, and in his judg. ment thinks the Governor did not "tote fair;" but he should not try to defeat a great and good man for Gov ernor on purely personal grounds.

At least that is our idea of the matter A most terrific storm of. wind, rain and hail struck. Kansas City a week ago yesterday, demolishing several large buildings, among which were the court house and a school building. So far as heard from twenty-nine men women and children were killed out right, and over fifty persons seriously wounded, The saddest sight of aU was to witness the agony depicted on the contenances of the parents of those children who, were buried in the de- bries of the yireefced school building, as one after-, another trie- mangled bodies were removed. The Wabash railroad bridge over4he Missouri was also badly wrecked, and altogether it was a terrific storm.

We are In receipt of a copy the Pilgriiri Sard's (Scott Cuthins) new bdok, entitled ''Reminiscences of th Early Dayi" The author claims this to.bS.a' true history of a company of emigtantswho started for CaL '49, and were captured by the Indians tyho then inhabited Barber county. He had the misfortune however td have a span of colts stray away or we ire stolen, and came near losing, his life also. While camping in a.

A few of the young folks of this section met at the residence of John M. Peterson, last Wednesday even ing, and a very pleasant time was had, Frank teslie's Sunday Magasuie for Jane. Is especially noticeable for its num erous full page illustrations, some of which are exceptionally beautiful The Luray Cave, in is the subject of several fine cuts.

A beautiful picture is a reproduction of a painting by Augustin Lhardy, entitled "Prepar ations tor a Day the Country and a number of contrasted scenes on the two rivers, the Rhine and the Hudson, give some idea of the beauty of these two streams. An antiquarian interest attaches to the article on first edition of the "Pilgrim's Progress," with reproductions of its quaint engravings and a fac simile oi the text. A beautiful reproduction of one of Giaeomelli's bird pictures shows the hemlet-crested humming-bird and its nest. Many other beautiful pictures fill the number while the literary portion is up to the high level of this favorite family Published by Mr3. Frank LESLiE, 53 55 ands7 Park Place, N.

Y. Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Chicago Herald, we are in receipt of a fac simile copy of the first daily paper ever published in Chicago! It was issued in 1839, just forty-seven years agoand is a very crude affair indeed. At that time this now wonderful city of Chicaga contained an alleged population of 4,200, and the starting of a daily paper was; a hazardous In this day and age a city of 4,000 inhabitants will support at least one large daily paper, and perhaps two but nearly every branch of business has un dergone radical changes during a period of nearly half a century. This old paper can be seen by calling at this office, 1 The Sumner -county Republican Convention, week before last, adopted a resolution endorsing J. W.

Hamu ton, of Wellington, for State course each county may at their pleasure endorse some one of their influential men for the above import- ant office, but all the same we are of the opinion that S. T. Howe, the present incumbent, will receive the nomination for Treasurer on July 7th, and be re-elcted by a handsome ma-! jority. rj Earber county would no doubt be happy to furnish a candidate for so important an office, but it is entirely out of the question, so what is the use of endorsing a man for it? Every man who owns a foot of real estate in Barbef.county will have the value of that land greatly increased by having a court house with a good vault in which to Store the records; For instance, if you own a farm of a hundred and sixty acres, and you now" ask $15.60 per acre fof it, as soon the 'court' house $3 erected, you can safely ask $18.00 with as much likely-hood of getting it as you would 5 at the present tiraei' These are feet-.
