On the Pennsylvania cannl, diggers ate the coarsest diet, were housed in the rudest sheds, and paid a month from May to November, and from November to May. Hod-carriers and mortar-mixers, diggers and choppers, who, from 171)3 to 1800, labored on the public buildings and cut the streets and avenues of Washington City received $70 a year; or, if they wished, $G0 for all the work they could perform from March 1 to December 20. The hours of work were invariably from sunrise to sunset. Wages nt Albany and New York were 'three shillings or as money then went 40 cents per day; at Lancaster, $8 to $10 a month; elsewhere in Pennsylvania Workmen were content with in summer and live in winter. At Baltimore men were glad to be hired at IS pence per day.

HARTLAND, KANSAS Is situated on the Santa Fe Piailroad 30 miles west of Garden City, and on the iiolth Bank of the Arkansas river. It is certainly the best town of its age in the state of Kansas.

The first house was erected in August. It now has five hundred inhabitants, and controlls the trade of Southwest Kansas, "No Man's Land," and the Panhandle of Texas. Investors in Surprise and arfclan 1 proper ty have all made money far beyond their most sanguine expectations. Still there is money and and room for more. Hartland is near the center of what is known as Kearney County, and when the lines are re-established will be the county seat of Kearney county.

The Company have spent thousands of dollars in building bridges, hotels, and making other heeded improvements. All of which the settler gfffcs the advantage of, without being taxed one cent And all persons seeking investments, or a pleasant home in the Southwest, where they can have the benefit of good schools, churches, alid the best of society, could not do better than to take the train for Hnrtlandi And should they want to visit Surprise or any of the towns in Southwest Kansas, "No Man's Land," of the Panhandle of Texas, can take the stage which Will take them to all points at reasonable rates, south and southwest of Hartland, where the best government lands in the state of Kansas are situated, subject to entry under the Homestead) Pre-emption, and Timber Culture laws.
