Too much publicity can not be given to 4 a fact which is mentioned in the London Lancet.

It appears that for some time past there has been an epidemic among, young children in the neighborhood, of London-, ending in many cases in the death of the child, the disease presenting every appearance of erysipelas. A person whose child was thus attacked suspected the violet powder in use in the nursery, and sent a packet to a firm of analysts for a chemical examination. It. was found to contain twenty-five per cent, of white arsenic. This poison, it seems, is unfortunately exceedingly cheap at all events, cheaper than starch, of which violet powder is usually made.

It bears the date of the year S3 of Ptolemy Phila-delphus, and the contracting parties are Patma, sori of Pehelkhous, and Taoutem, the daughter of Rehu. P. class attraction is promised for the opening of tne ixmbition on the 10th when one of the principal features on the programme will be the trial trip of an aerial ship, the invention of Mr.

Charles F. Ritchel, formerly a resident of Corry, but now residing at Bridgeport, Conn. A Press reporter yesterday visited Mr. Ritchel with a view to obtaining some "particulars regarding the machine. characteristic peculiarities of inventors were conspicuous by their absence.

Mr. Ritchel is apparently about 34 years of age, and looks like a well preserved specimen of a Granger. There is nothing in his face to indicate extraordinary genius, but on the. contrary, he seems, like a. man whose inventive capacities could not be expected to rise higher than a patent churn or an improved washboard.

One thing he certainly does possess, which favorably impresses his visitors an all-abiding faith in the utility of his invention, and a firm belief that he has been the means of giving such a start to this subject, that regular aerial lines across the ocean will have become a possibility at no distant day. He is by no means boastful of the results of his exertions, and. spoke, throughout the interview, of himself and his work in a very modest manner. I have been work ing on this idea," said Mr. Ritchel, 44 since 172, and have ouut three ma chines, all of which have riroved sue cessful.

The machine which I propose to submit to a practical test in this city will prove to be, tninlc, the most finished piece of work ever made in America. It weighs 215 pounds and is oper ated by muscular power. Of course, it is only the beginning, and ships on the same principle, but constructed for steam as a motor, will be speedily completed. I purpose with this machine to sail all around the building; to go out and in at will to go from one tower to the other, and then descending nearly to the earth, to enter the building and go anywhere within in the air, at will The ship will go up or or for ward, will turn almost in itg own length at the will of the operator. An ascen sion of nearly 1,000 feet has been made, and it has proven entirely successlul Trips have been made in Bridgeport in presenoe of P.

T. Baruum and his family, and that gentleman will, I am sure, vouch for the truth of my statement. It was, I may sav, Mr. Barnum who man aged for the engagement here with the directors of the Exhibition. I am hav ing a machine rapidly completed to send to the Paris Exhibition, but I am pre pared to make the first grand public dis play in Philadelphia especially as, at the opening of the Exhibition, it will sret world-wide celebrity at once.

In June next I intend to give an exhibition at the Falls of Niagara, to sail up and down and over the alls.to descend to the water's edge, and in every other way to make a crucial test of the absolute safety of my invention. It is so simple that it can be operated by a boy, and 1 am sure that there can be no possibility of a failure." In answer to further questions Mr. Ritchel stated that he was an in ventor by profession and was acquainted with Edison, whom he regarded as li the greatest inventive genius the world ever saw." He has already patented forty-five inventions, as he has this latest, both in this country and in Europe His former efforts, however, have been mainly devoted to labor-saving aparat-us, and the most important of them have been a machine boring 1,500 holes at once, for brush manufacture, and an inlaying machine, by which the 10,000 different designs can be executed. In answer to the reporter's request for a detailed description of his invention, Mr. Ritchel declined to give any particulars further than that it was twenty -four feet long, and that a cylin der made by the lioodyear Kubber Com pany, filled with hydrogen gas, was the elevating power.

It is propelled by an operator on a saddle, and is declared to be perfectly simple in its construction and its method of operation. A private trial of the machine will be made in the presence of a number of scientific gen tlemen early next week. A Tramp Story. A story has been told U3 which seems to go far in corroboration of the late Boss Tweed's theory of chances. It is said that something like a year ago a tramp called at the house of Mr.

Bailey, in the township of Mosa, and asked permission to stop all night. A little per suasion led to his request being granted, and he was also asked to take supper. During the meal Mrs. Bailey called to her little daughter, but the young one paid no attention. Again calling, the mother used the full given name of the child: 44 Isabella Stevens, don't, you hear me?" The tramp lookedup' as if interested, and.

remarked, musingly: Stevens? Isabella Stevens? Have you got any relations of that name?" 44 Yes," said the lady, 4 4 that was my mother's maiden There is," said the tramp, an immense fortune in Cornwall, England, which has been for twenty years awaiting a claimant of that name who is supposed to be in America." He then proceeded to give all the details, he could, and the result was that Bailey wrote to her mother, who resides within a few miles of this xity, and the last-named secured the fortune, and is now enjoying the fruits of her daughter's hospitality to the tramp. These were stationed along the road at suitable distances, end; at each relay the driver was changed, each) gentleman driving hia own. CoL, Delancy Kane, the chief coaching lunatic of this unfortunate country, furnished the coach, a yellow English-built one, called the 4 Tally Ho." The whole squad wore a uniform exceedingly grotesque in appearance, but of course quite the correct thing, without which coaching would be impossible. It consists of a green cutaway coat, with gold buttons; a waistcoat of yellow plush with green bars; and a white "plug" hat the style of pantaloons, being immaterial in coaching, was varied according to the architectural taste and culture of the wearers. On the whole, coaching is the most elaborate fooling which idle men have yet devised. AlX.

One of the most successful counterfeiting schemes is to issue a small quantity of notes on a certain bank with the name of the place, Fresideut or Cashier misspelled. Upon discovery the bank sends a warning through the country, pointing out the error.

Then the counterfeiters make a second issue with the name or names spelled correctly and circulate them boldly, knowing that merchants and storekeepers will look only for the indicated catch." On the birth of an heir to the tiny principality of Reuss, the other day, the capital crty was illtrminated, -and, as a German paper remarks, the candles shed i their mild light across the frontier. Wood," as every body has always called him, has never been other than a thoroughly good fellow, and of course he had legions of friends. In fact, pretty much every one within the scope of his acquaintance i3 his friend, in one sense or another, and he has no enemies worth speaking of. It is well known that he once kept up intimate relations with the 44 tiger," and had a strong penchant for 44 bucking" that animal in his lair, and since his failure set old gossip going again some of his quondam chums have been rehearsing the famous bout he once had with John Morrissey, in the latter's club-house in Twenty-fourth Street. The story has been told several times, but may bear mention again. Ben.

was in the habit of dropping in to Morrissey's place occasionally for a little recreation, and one 10 years ago, he sauntered in as usual, and fell afoul of the bank. Morrissey was there aud many men about town, all of whom knew ood's pluck and hang- on-activeness, and the party settled down for some lively work. Wood had about $3,000 in his pocket, and' as the betting was heavy he managed to get to the bottom in an hour. In fact he was cleaned out. But his blood was up that night and as his reputation, for pluck among tho boys was at stake, he decided that once for all it should make or break.

Jlis ready cash was gone, but he owned valuable property on Tryon Row, where the Stoats Zeitung building now stands, and he proposed to hypothecate the property to Morrissey against whatsoever sum, up to its value, he should The offer was accepted and the great fight began. It lasted all night and up to 9 o'clock next morning, and when a truce was finally Ben had won back the 3,000 he started with and scored about 120,000 ahead besides. With the money that Morrissey. had advanced to him on the hypothecated property he turned around and gave' Jehn the worst whaling he ever received 1 at the card-tabld. cessation of hostilities. Both men were "true grit to the last and neither showed the least ill-temper from beginning to endi'-' It was on that occasion that i Ben, -performed the extraordinary-feat; of smoking $90 worth of cigars in one Morrissey had a special brand of cigars at $1 each for flush custorriers, and, Woqd, who is a tremendous (or chewer, rather for he merely chews furiously at a and then flings it away), managed to spoil ninety of. them while the fight lasted." Augustus -r Frederick Thisixk-thwatte, of London, with a yearly in. come rather under allowed his wife 500 for dress expenses, she agreeing for that consideration not to contract debts on any account whatever. The husband relied on thU agreement, but the wife contended that he had waived it by paying some debts she had incurred since, and has ordered such dresses a she considers necessary to her station until the whole liability amounts to nearly 30,000.

Madame Rosalie, a foreign dressmaker, being refused payment by Mr. Thistlethwavte for her share of this grand total, 3S1.19s.l0d., brought suit in the Court of Common Pleas but the jury decided against her, and the 30,000 indebtedness obviously stands small chance of being removed. Madame Rosalia testified during the trial that the proper amount for a lady's dress 100 month, some, of her customers spending 2,000 a year. i A company for tho insurance of the fidfilirr nersons in Dositions of trust is being organized iu New York City. VE6ETIE3E penalty of not less than two, nor more than seven rears' hard labor, is not in conflict with the act of Congress known as The Jivu Kights act." lhis is a reversal of a decision by the predecessors of the present Supreme Court of Alabama, to the effect that the Civil Rights bill conferred upon the negro 'the right to make and enforce con tracts, among which is that of marriage with any citizen capable of enteric into that relation." The court holds in the present case that the law making such marriages punishable is valid be cause no discrimination is made in favor of the white- person, either in the capacity to enter into such a relation or in the penalty and that, moreover, at the time of the passage of the Civil Rights act similar laws to that of Alabama existed in several, perhaps in nearly all of the JNorthern, states, wnose representatives in Congress voted for that act." In view of the previous conflict ing decision the court recommends the pardon of the person upon whose case they passed.

A bronze statue of Shakesreare has been placed in Tower Grove Fark, St. Louis, by Henry The figure is nine feet in height, and is described as representing the poet "in middle life, admirably posed in. an easy attitude, with the glow of inspiration upon his countenance, holding a pen in his right hand, which han2S at his side, in the act of composing. The head is bare and bald, as seen in tho portraits. A short, thick cloak is suspended loosly from the shoulders, displaying the proportions of the musclular, well knit form to advantage.

The breeches are buckled at the knees, and are loose and ample, and the waistcoat is ornamented, and the shirt-collar is large and round ihe face impresses the beholder as a man of genius and high bearing." The statue was cast in Munich at a cost of $25,000. It stands on a red granite pe destal 18 feet high on the four sides of which are Shakespearean scenes in bas- relief. Hamlet at Ophelia's grave, Lady Macbeth sleep walking, Queen Kathe-rine with the Cardinals, and Falstaff before the battle of Shrewsbury. The Falstaff is a likeness of the late BenDe Bar in the character. Near The top of the pedestal is the inscription, He was not of any age, but for all time." Dr.

Tierce's Invalids' and Tourists' Hotel Grand Opening. Dr. R. V. Pierce ooened his new Invalids' and Tourists' Hotel, at Buffalo, N.

on the 29th of April, with a re ception to the press, followed by one on the 30th to the citizens, both of which were largely attended and highly enjoyed by all the guests, whom the genial Doctor received and entertained i mi in uiu most princeiy styie. inc structure itself is magnificent and imposing, the style of architecture being what is known as the modem French. Sit uated as it is, on the highest ground in the city, with a pleasant wooded lawn before it, sloping gently to the Niagara River, it commands the finest and healthiest obtainable, especially as Buffalo" i3 probably the healthiest city in the country. Skillful combinations of maple, ash, oak, cherry, ebony "and mahogany, with tiles in according colors, form the richest effects in the several halls and parlors. It is heated tlTroughout by steam, and fresh water is drawn from the street by a large pump, which forces it up into tanks on thl; fourth, fifth and sixth stories.

Pare air and sunshine being two of Dr. Pierce's favorite medicines, the' system of ventilation" is, therefore, most perfect every 'room being so constructed as to receive fresh outdoor air and provided with a double escape for any air which has become inipure. The value of such ventilation to invalids needs no-comment. There is not a room in the' house that is not visited or from -tho door of which a staircase cannot, be seen. On every floor there 'a re four stations, each provided with 100 feet of hose-; connected with tho Champion chemical fire-extinguishing system, and which, with the assistance of the -speaking annunciator, can be instantaneously Everything pertaining to the medical department is placed down upon the basement floor, thus giving no unpleasant suggestion of the sick room to those guests who not need a physician.

Here we "find tho Swedish health-lift, reception-room, consultation-rooms, of which there are several, each one for some special class pf diseases all tastefully arranged and well supplied with the appliances necessary for their different departments. The bath system is arranged in the most complete and luxurious manner. The rooms are large and fitted up with glazed tiles, and' comprise Turkish, Russian and electric baths. In the matter of recreation, the house is well supplied, having bowling-alley, billiard-room and gymnasium. The capacity of the house is about 250 guests.

The tower, 140 feet from the ground, rears its magnificent head above the whole, making a grand tout ensemble. The hotel opened for business on the 1st of May. The enterprise will doubtless meet with that unbounded success which it most surely deserves. A witness, on being cross-questioned lately, swore that he was in the habit of associating with every grade of society, from lawyers up. The lawyers rwho 44 had him in hand" gasped out, That'a all," and sat down.
