The two girls were ironing the weeks laundry in a Utile frame summer kitchen adjoining the main structure of the Long house and used a gasoline stove to heat the irons. Shortly before 4 o'clock John Lund, the family coachman, who was washing a carriage in the barn, heard screams from the summer kitchen. Rushing out he saw flames bursting from the windows. A moment later Mary Glynn ran from the kitchen, her clothing in a blaze.

Lund took in the situation and ran back into the barn and seizing all the blankets and carriage covers he could find, he hastened back to the unfortunate girl and enveloped her in the cloths. Then Lund heard the screams of Nora Keville. In the interim neighbors had rushed to the scene, and they went to Nora's assistance. The damage to the Long home is only nominal. Louis Long, a son of Adam Long was at home, and as Boon as he saw the flames turned in an alarm.

The department responded promptly and in a few minutes the blaze was extinguished. The fire department carries with it a lotion of linseed oil and lime water for emergencies and this was applied in quanlties to the injured girls. Police Surgeon Iuen arrived a few moments later in the police ambulance and wathed the girls in cotton. For some time they were left on the green sward about the Long home, then they were taken within the house. Both suffered intense agony.

Both eirls caUed for a priest and Father Kreitz was hastily sent for. He arrived in a few minutes and administered the last sacrament to Nora Keville, who was said to be dying.
