Girard, Kansas; May 2, 1894 Tiie to. Jacks. Reception, CHURCHES as well as other societies may be considered a little clannish at times, but this is mostly aue f. A.nAat desire of the CM uwmv members for the advance en their particular circle of worshippers. Of one thing there can there are members in all societies who do not allow their zeal for a chosen creed to stand between them and their neighbors when an occasion is presented for thorn to open their doors to company.

There is one grand home in Girard, to enter which always seems a special privilege to those invited, although that home is as norv partisan, as non-sectarian, as non-aristocratic, as if it were presided over by the most humble family in Girard, instead of by the owner of one of the strongest banking houses in southeastern Kansas and a wife, rich in her own estate, with a hand ever open to those less fortunate. This is the elegant home of Dr. and Mrs. H. W.

Haldeman. It was a fitting compliment to the well-earned love the members of the Presby terian church of this city have borne for Rev. and Mrs. E. C.

Jacka, during his pastorate here, that the parting reception given them last evening should be at the Haldeman home. The grandeur and brilliancy of that home, as presented last evening, decorated and lighted throughout, especially for this occasion, gave no uncertain token of the earnest epirit manifested by the cultured host and hostess in the hearty reception arranged. Dr. Haldeman and his estimable wife have no superiors in this or any other city as artful entertainers, and last evening they seemed to be determined to outdo all former efforts in this direction At an early hour the guests commenced to arrive, and the most hearty manner in which they were welcomed and made feel that that home was their home, at least so long as any should desire to pay homage to the pastor who has so faithfully looked after the wel-fare'of the Presbyterian church here, was manifestly emblematical of the crowned headsof the old world. Those who admire music, art and loveliness are not required to appeal to the imagination when they enter the palatial residence of Dr.

and Mrs. Haldeman. And that "home last night! The song birds of the greatest young musical city In the west were there. Nor did they hesitate or beg to be excused when asked to contribute to the enjoyment of the swarming throng. The two elegant pianos were kept busy by turns, and above the merry buzz of friendly conversation the clear notes of classical selections rang out upon the fairest evening of the year.

All nature seemed to smile with gladness upon the occasion, to make it one to be treasured in the archives of memory by not only the honored guests but by tbe dignified doctor and his worthy life partner, and the hundreds who were present, as well. At least three hundred people passed through the welcome swinging gates, shaking Dr. and Mrs. Haldeman and their departing pastor and wife by the hand. Though the hours set for the reception wereannouoced from 7 to 9 o'clock, it was well ntgh midnight when the last departure was made.

A large table was spread to which all were invited to sip coffee and taste cake, and throughout the large residence and grounds merrlmeut reigned supreme. Girard Public Schools. Superintendent's monthly report to the Board of Education, for month ending April 27, 1894; all grades lyWorld mm at her grandma's and never was seen a brighter, happier little girl. She was sick when brought home from this visit, and after a few days passed away, leaving stricken hearts and darkened souls behind Little Mabel was the joy and sunshine-of her home; but her mission on earth was finished, and she went to Jesus as pure and innocent as she came. "Oh.

mourners, weep not for one Who's now at perfect rest; She's Just across the river with The holy and the blest. Her earthly house of mortal clay We've placed beneath the sod; But don't forget that Mabel dear Is at home with her God. "Then wipe away your fallingtears; Tnis body is only clay, And all that made your Mabel dear Is living yet to-day." E. M. Sunday School Convention.

D. McFarlin, Pres't. Minnie Boggs, Sec'y. School Picnic Mrs. Maggie McMillan, teacher of the school in district No.

51, invited the pupils in the Gregg district (where she taught last year, but was compelled stop before the term closed on account of poor health) to join her pupils in a picnic at her home in Crawford township last Saturday. About 10 o'clock pupils and patrons from both districts began to assemble and kept it up until the number reached 80. All brought well filled baskets. Swings were put up in the barn floor and yard and all went to work to have a good time, swinging, games, music, and dinner being the chief amusiments. The musical programme was conducted by Miss Anna Adamson, assist ed by others, and was a pleasant feat ure.

When the dinner hour arrived all wre comfortably seated on the lawn under the shade of the trees, and Mrs. McMillan, assisted by her sisters, Misses Minnie and Anna Adamson, took charge of affairs. The good things which farmers' wives know so well how to prepare, were passed and repassed until all were fully satisfied. There was chicken, ham, pie, cake, pickles, sandwiches, bread and butter, rolls, coffee, lemon After dinner came more games and more swinging, which were kept up until about 4 o'clock, when all went home, having spent a most enjoyable day. It was a picnic that "will long be pleasantly remembered by the participants.

"Why la He so This question is often heard and nearly as often unanswered. It is not always remembered, as it; should be, that the occasion of an ill temper and irritability is otten to be found in the physical condition of the persons affected. What Is the use of trying to "harmonize" a man whose liver has gone back on him? If a man is tortured with rheumatism, how can he be expecte to be affable and agree able? Can a confirmed dyspeptic be expected to be cheerful and always ready to tell a funny story? The only way to remove the difficulty Is to get at tbe cause. Dyspepsia, rheumatism, impure blood and fever troubles yield to Hood's Sarsaparilla; this is why it is an effective tranquilizer, a peaceful messenger and a preventive of domes tic quarrels. The Ep worth League held its regu lar meeting at the Methodist Episco pal church last evening.

The meeting was well attended and an entertaining programme, consisting of vocal and in strumental music, reading and recita tions, was rendered. The devotional exercises were conducted by Miss Em ma Purdum. This league or young Christian workers deserves great praise for its untiriner. zealous effort to do good. v-y- The strike in the other coal reel one throughout the country is having the effect to increase the output of Craw ford county mines.

HERE may be things that Emll Hertner does not know exactly how to do. As a preacher he has been tried, and up to the pres ent writing there is no record of his appearing on the staffe as a rival of Joe Emmettor Keone or McCullough, but he knows what a good show Is and never fails to gainer one in for his Girard patrons if it hap pens through this section so situatea that he can catch a date for his opera bouse. Hertner is also a genius in his way, for when the theatrical season is slow, he can arrange an entertainment for the society loving people which alwayp draws a full house. His Mav Pole Ball last evening was an illustration of the fact that Mr. Hertner knows what the young people of Girard enjoy, and it can be truthfully said that no more delightfnl ball was ever given in this city.

The attendance was not suffocating, but that which was wanting in numbers was easily made up in the quality, or rather, the high character of the par- tici pants. And they all danced, danced as onjy neighbors and friends dance together from an early hour until there was little time left of the night for rest. The striking feature of the ball was the contrast presented to gatherings of a like character in this county only a few years ago. Those who will look Sack a few Tears can well rememoer that often at a ball it was necessary for some of the smooth-faced lads or boys nreaent to tie a handkerchief around their arm. which entitled them to take the place of a lady in the set; for here were, more men than ladies present, ana in order to fill up a set a young man must be thus substituted to step off.

a lady's part of the dance. In Girard this order of things is reversed, or rather, there are usually about one and a half or two ladies to each young man present, and the girls like to dance iust as well as did those of yore. The opera house last evening was fairly swarming with pretty young laaies, dressed in taste, all may be assured, so attractive and graceful in their flitting dances that the most confirmed old bachelor, had he been present, could not have helped but admire some one of them. The supper spread under the superin- tendency of the popular caterer, Mrs. Hertner.

was fit for the gods. Every thing the hungered gathering could wish was served in abundance, and it would be difficult to imagine the prep aration of a banquet more inviting. The people of Girard are fast hnding out that Hertner is not joking when he proposes to entertain them royally, and with the experience of his every effort in this direction, his popularity creases. The May Pole Ball was a grand suc cess in every way. A San Jose, woman about to elope was stopped by her husband and had him arrested for assault and bat tery because his interference bordered on the rude.

A wise man will be considerate of his wife's feelings under all circumstances and thus avoid arrest for assault. W. T. Cornweil was called to Cherry -vale, Kansas, yesterday afternoon by a telegram announcing the serious illness of his son, Oscar, who is agent for the Memphis route at that place George Grant, colored, a native of Ireland, has applied for citizenship Da ne rs in the New York courts. He has a pronounced brogue and speaks Gaelic vvitn consiueriiuie uusncy.
