N. 31 O. 31 i I i rr hi if. i I a been made to kidnap the delectable pair or cause them any Inconvenience other than calling them to account in court of jutstice for their unwarrant able libels upon the people of this county. Some men can stand it to called villians, forgers and perjurers by an interloper without complaining and some men can't.

J. W. Calvert, it appears, is one of those who couldn't take it with good grace and caused a warrant to be sworn out on the pair for criminal libel. When an attempt was make to arrest Wood and Price they were frightened and ran and plead for their lives. Their guilty consciences were their strongest accusers and tney Knew tnat it justice as known to the frontier was done them that their career of infamy was an end and that their wind would be shut off with a picket rope.

The people of Hugoton are a law-abiding people and had only resolved to giv: the two carpet-baggers a taste of the law they- had outraged. J. W. Cat vert swore out a warrant before a jus tice of the peace, they were arrested and gave bond, members of the town company and Mr. Creek going on their bonds.

Mr. Wood thanked the men who went on his bond and, for consideration, sold out his interest Woodsdale, When he knew that rescuing party was coming after him he asked to be given- an escort and conducted out of the county. He didn't want to meet or be seen bv his partners north of the sand hills. He picked his own men and went on excursion of his own seeking, of his own free will and accord, agreeing to stay away until after electiorj What he got for his interests in the town of Woodsdale we don't know, but the money was publicly raised among the people of Hugoton and Wood publicly stated that he had sold out his interests in Woodsdale. The idea of men being kidnapped in open daylight, at midday in this town absurd, besides letters of Wood's friends state that he is in safe hands and that he was voluntarily ab senting himsefl.

The people Wood was most afraid of were the ones he -f fa t-vat a rA A s-t I ka ott nn Was utu am n. uu uuu he was afraid to leave the county alone, The bargain made with Wood was known and witnessed by disinterest ed parties of this town and other lo calities. Whatever he may say to put himself at rights with the people up north will have no effect, as his bargain and sale are too well known and there are too many witnesses to testify against him. Aubery and Dudley, the notorious letter-writers, the ones who have created all the ex citement over the "kidnapping" of Wood and Price are the ones to blame in this affair. Mr.

Dudley in one of his letters gives his opinion away in these words: "I firmly believe that Wood will either be compelled to sell out for Jtisoo or will be murdered." The idea of that man being compel! ed to takg oo! There would be no need of threats or intimidation if the were staring him in the face, for it was known all along that a much less price would buy him. All the people of this place want is a peaceful and quiet election and an early organization of the county. If Woodsdale outvotes us fairly for the county seat she will get it and hear no "squealing" from the people of this town. We don't need to resort to intreague or dishonest means to secure wis as tne county seat, tor we don't believe one-seventh of the votes of the county could pos- sibly be polled against us whether Wood were at llber? or where he ought to have been long ago in the penitentiary. It may not have been good policy to arrest the slanderer or to Purf his worthless est a worthless town site, but since things have gone as they have, we insist 0n outsiders letting us alone to work out the best iQterests of Stevens county in a Placable manner.

Men who were sent here to investi gate the supposed outrages returned with a smile upon their faces and ready to exonorate the people of Hu goton from all blame. Papers out side in mentioning the supposed kid napping have almost as a unit express ed the opinion that the strangling of rhp riisriirhPT wmim h.vc hppn mcti. fiable an(j a 0(j thj for tbe tat As a stirrer up of contention S. Wood has a reputation in nearly every county in Kansas. At Newton, thir teen years ago, the best citizens of that place, some of them high in po sition now, led him but of town with rope around his neck, because he tried to make them trouble and disor ganize their city, At Lake City, Col the people did the same, and Wood left the town, in the night, never to return, because it would have been death to go" back.

At they led him to the depot and covered his rotten carcass with rotten eggs and warned him against returning At Meade Center he narrowly escaped death because of his outrageous trans And at he was confer red with and treated as a gentleman when he ought to have been lynched He is an unsavory old scoundrel, who ia undeserving the name of He ia entirely destitute of honor of de cency, and ought not to be tolerated in any community composed of de cent people. He is a man 'of inde cency in mma ana coay. me paopie G. W. McClistick, Editor and Pub Democratic State Ticket.

FOR CONGRESSMAN, 7th. THOMAS UEOKQE, Of Sumner County. Do your duty next Thursday. Be early at the polls next Thurs dav and see that we have a full vote and a fair Do your duty next Thursday and let the people outside of our county know our sentiments. Sweet scented Sam trying to pose as a kidnapped martyr is enough to make deviis laugh and angels weep.

The people of Hugoton are not scared, if some their number are under arrest. Right is on our side and right will prevail. A man who would go back on as fair a bargain as Wood voluntarily entered into would commit any manner of crime. Is it justice the crowd tip north wants? Men who have helped to strangle others without authority of law may get more justice than they want. Every disorganize whether his name be Wood, Price, Wells, Dud-lev.

Auberv or John Doe, is an ene- my to the best interests of county. Stevens I All tht? neonle of Hueoton ask is -r- I a lair vote and a quiet election. i i a 1 they are beaten in the county seat election they will take their medi cine without making any wry faces. Some of the people north of the sand hills refuse to believe that Wood and price would sell them out. They will know them better before they get through with them.

Let no acts of violence be committed, but let the withering contempt of the people of Stevens county rest forever upon the men who are engag ed in this damnable scheme of disor ganization. No man in Stevens county will raise a hand against a fair and honor able contest for county seat honors, It is the damnable scheme of disor ganization that has aroused the peo ple of this county to the present high state of excitement. The best citizens and business men of Hugoton stand ready to testify that S. N. Wood sold out his interests in Woodsdale, that they sub scribed money to pay him and that the two men left for the Neutral Strip of their own free will and accord, Now, who is to be believed, these men or the scoundrels that don't dare acknowledge the trade he has -r Dudley and Aubery stated in their letters and dispatches that certain men who helped arrest the libelers last week are desperadoes and escap-1 7 statements made for except for effects We have heard that serious charges could be made against some of the gentlemen up north, but it would prooaDiy ao no gooa to air xneir rec- ords a contest for county seat.

One is said to have, while acting as an of- aided in strangling several men, another is said to have burned his buildings to get the insurance and another has been holding two claims, a nomesteaa ana a preemption uum at the same time. Pretty creatures these are to be calling people per jurers, forgers and murderers. For the information of Col. S. N.

Wood we will state that G. W. Mc Clintick is not at home, has not been at home for several weeks, and will not be at home for two or three months to come. Whatever Wood to do with the county seat issue before the people of Stevens county, and is only brought before them to attract their attention from the points at issne. We can say, however, in answer, to the charges that he has made against McClintick, that he is a liar, a villain and thief of long stand ing, and a robber; of little A more graceless scoundrel never contaminated the atmosphere of any country.

There is" nothing so low that he will not stoop to; no charac ter so high that he will not try to besmear it; i There, is no crime that be ill not commit to carry a point, and no friend so dear that he will not be tray for a trifle.
