The Dime Social at the Congregational church Tuesday evening was a very pleasant affair. Chas. Peck, of Anthony, and Mr. and Mrs. J.

K. Wilcox, were at the Commercial Sunday. Mrs. I). T.

A few friends drank tea with her Tuesday evening. Will Blaine resign? It is alternately rumored and denied that on account of ill health and clashing in matters of state policy that the secretary of state will resign. Last Sunday Mr. Harry Landis, county school superintendent, Mr. E.

P. Caruthers, of the Index and E. II. Nixon, of Medicine Lodge, were registered at the Ilardwick. Mr.

K. C. Dunegan, of the Ileno City Capital, arrived from Reno City, last Sunday. He has but a short time to greet his friends hero as he leaves for Missouri soon. One day this week Mr.

J. M. Lang-ley showed us a beat, grown in D. T. Flynn1 garden, which weighed 5 lbs.

and 2 ounces, and measured 15 inches around, and 19 inches long. The loads of wheat and oats that arc daily being hauled through our Btrects give one the impression that Kiowa will soon be another Wichita as regards "boom" and business. Mr. Drummond, of the Ilazelton Express, will begin organizing our band next Saturday evening. Again will be heard during the coming summer nights the dulcet strains of the French horn mingled with the thunder of the big bass drum.

The topic for the meeting of the society of Christian Endeavor tomorrow evening is found in the fiist Epistle of Peter, IV 17th and 8th verses. It is desirable that as perfect an understanding of the Scripture text as possible be obtained, and in order to do this more study will be required than usual, as the subject involves a deep theological question. Last Sunday evening one of our clergymen, while illustrating a point in his discourse, referred to the recent pugilistic contest in Mississippi as having taken place between Sullivan ana another person whose name he could not remember. In our opinion it would indicate a better state of morals if there were more whose consciousness the name had "evaded," and who would denounce the affair as a "gambling process aud degrading to the ries for the least money? at llerold Metz's, of course. Wanted At once, man with team to break sod also, one good farm hand.

Milan, of Corwin, were in the city the first of the week. He says everything is flourish-ins in his neighborhood. Young ladies and gentlemen who are studiously inclined, should avail themselves of the literary outing that is afforded by the Barber County Normal at Medicine Lodge. The summer term begins July 22nd, and continues in session six weeks. Daring the storm last Sunday morning lightning struck the residence of Mrs.

Strawther tearing off the weatherboard ing of the west end, throwing some of it to a considerable distance, and damaging the chimney. It would seem a miraculous escape for the family, but none were harmed more than slightly shocked. A lady coming to Kiowa for the purpose of purchasing dry goois informs us that the price on pique, lawns and challies is about one cent a vard cheaper here than in Anthony. Score about two for Kiowa. Kiowa is "getting there" in good shape, and it is only a question of titre when she will have the trade of a considerable of Harper county.

Mr. Bird Watrus arrived from Guthrie, Oklahoma, yesterday. His description of the immense business done at the post of3ce there, of which he was an employe, was interesting. He says that a constant string of men fiilt up to the one small window, which is successively darkened by the thrusting in of the heads, shoulders and arms of the men who are waiting for their mail. Ml.

Watrus will hand them down hereafter at the clothing store of Mr. Tannebaum. Last Friday evening the young people of the society of Christian Endeavor were royally entertained at the heme of Mrs. G. E.

Westman. Chinese lanterns were hung in the arbor, and around the lawn, and to make the illumination complete, soft bright rays were reflected by "That mystic maiden with fire laden, Whom mortals call the moon." Signor Rossi's harp was attuned to the occasion and the air was filled with sweet music. Ice cream and cake were served. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs.

"Withers, Mr. and Mrs. Bentley, Mr. and Mrs. Laughman, the Misses Connor, Miss Allen, Miss McAllister, Mrs.

Christo- pher, Miss O'Neil, Miss Roberts, Miss Beale, Mis3 Lconhait, Miss Wheel- ock, Miss Nay, Messrs. Justis, llerold, Wincet, 'Williams, Lu-kins, Robinson, "Wells, Bakhaus, Lee, Niy and Cameron. The Farmer ami the Quail. Any one driving over our beautiful prairies will see these graceful birds in pairs and in flocks gliding over the turf and through the grass, making by their swift and pleasing movements an otherwise monotonous landscape interesting. They are the farmers' real friends, and the farmer in turn ought to protect theua.

They live on seeds and insects almost exclusively, which, if left to increase and grow year year will become a nuisance and destroy the farmers' crops. The statute of the state requires that the quails and other insect devouring birds be protected and it rests solely with the farmers to see that the law is rigidly enforced. This part of the state needs every such bird that is hatched, and when you see the hunter with his gun and dogs after your little feathered friends, it is your duty to at once protect yourself and those useful and harmless birds. The annual catalogue of the State Normal School, at Emporia, Kansas, lies on our table. The summary of attendance reaches the high figure of 030.

The faculty is an able one, and eight literary, oratorical and debating societies are organized. Only three students from Barber county are enrolled in the school, one of whom is a senior, Miss Maggie M. King, of Ilazelton. The two others are first year students, Miss Evangeline Betty, of Ilazelton, and Miss llattic M. Jackson, of Sharon.

Miss Jackson won the second prize or declamation daring the recent commence ment exercises. She was educated at Chicago and Atchison. The Normal quarterly, published under the surpcrvision of the Normal Faculty, at Emporia, is a wide awake sheet of eight pages and reflects the life of the school aa well as the senti raents of President Taylor, as follows: "May we have a personal interest ia each other. Let us strive to do something for mankind." BUY the ftOSB Setvln(r-MaehlnT1 to mi eiiauiiBDii i trade cans, by fl JES.ad roods wcare to. pf)ie ema tea tnera.
