He was pitched head first over the heavenly embattle-ments, his galluses sizzing thro the air and his hair standing on end and singing like a jews harp. He struck a place and called it hell. We suppose he was mad about being thrown out and had not forgotten his early training, hence the sulphurious nomenclature.

He looked around very carefully, just like a candidate for office does in this day, to see what his chances for success were. The only thing he found that he could realize on was a scrawny apple tree and a serpent gliding along in the gloom. This was before the fires of hell were started and we take it that it was gloomy. He started in business with the above ordinance and accoutrement and has been bombarding the bailiwicks of heaven ever since, with quary, Scribe; E. J.

It will be published by the Globe-Democrat, and also submitted to the iudges who will select from the batch of beauty which the contest now going on in many of the towns in Kansas will developc, the most beautiful woman in the state. The contest wil! close on June 1st Kcv. Hatfield Kcsisrns. Rev.

W. II. Ilatlield, who formerly was pastor ol the Presbyterian church In this city, but who has been at Galena for some time past, has tendered his resignation to the Galena church and has pone to Kansas City and from that point will seek a n. locatioL. His pulpit in Galena will be vacant Sunday.

And hereby, oh more or less gentle reader, hangs a tale. It is our judgment that Rev. Hatfield is the victim of public sentiment. It was against him. The people of his congregation thought he scolded too much.

They criticized him for it. The other evening in Galena they held a public meeting and Rev. Hatfield was there and so was a rich and powerful member of his church. The rich and powerful member of the Rev-erand's church publicly scored the Rcverand, saying he was an old scold, an old busy-body that he did not preach the gospel, but just jawed, jawed, jawed. Upon the occasion to which the rich and powerful member referred, Rev.

Hatfield had delivered himself of a scathing and powerful arraignment of the illegal liquor traffic. He thought he was serving God by doing battle with the whiskey octopus, by playing Theseus to the liquor mlnator, while the rich and powerful member of the church thought he should content himself to a recital of the incidents surrounding the burning bush. The rich and powerful member of the church found follows of his opinion In regard to the Jurisdiction of a preacher of the gospel. And so Rev. Hatfield resigns.

He Is known among half of his congregation as an irrepressible, pestiferous old scold, and the other half triink he is a martyr. And so the question arises: What are the duties of a minister? Is he to deliver only what he is paid for; Is he only to take religion unto the pulpit on Sunday morning and evening for a few moments exercise and then put it away in a box, wrapped in flannels, until the next performance, like the magician puts away his deceptive pharaphanalia, and the strong man his dumbbells, or Is he to fight the devil wherever he finds him, in the drawing" room, in the gilded palace of the homes In the alley, aye even in the very Shadojr of the Cross? And this takes us back to the proposition of the devil's great propensity for business. A New Set of Scales. Harry Howard's Wile Found. The lawful wife (now widow) of Harry Howard who was murdered last Friday in Webb City, was located in this city, Monday.

She is here with her parents, engaged in picking strawberjies at T. J. Skinuer's. Her father's name is Louis Powell, and they live when at home at Weir City. She was not informed of the tragic death of her husband.

After learning the particulars of the murder, the poor woman broke down and wept bitterly, saying that she hated lo hear of his dying in that manner. Her father gave Howard a bad name; said that he was very abusive to his wife, and was a dangerous man. The last she saw of her husband he had with him a woman sometimes called Frankie Ray and also known as Frankie Ward. Mrs. Howard has been married to bim since the 20th of last, August.

It is the opinion of those familar with the case that the, woman and her parents, although very poor, are nice people. Her request was that the authorities at Webb City would send her something of Harry's most anything, she said as a keepsake. The probability is that this request will be complied with by sending to the murdered man's widow an old worn pocket-book, which was all that was found on him, except two or three scraps of paper, bearing addresses of women; not a cent of money was in his pockets when they were searched by the coroner, and nothing had been taken from him after he fell, weltering in his own blood at the rear door of the restaurant, where he had recived his death blow. It will be remembered that Harry Howard was stabbed to death in a restaurant at Webb City, last -Friday, and up until the present writing the murderer has not been apprehended.
