Thus sang Bijah as he sprinkled clean sawdust on the floor and made ready for the performance. During the early morning a woman living on Rirard street brought down her ten-years-old boy to be prescribed for, and it was the neatest job Bijah has ever turned out in the spanking line. The shingle took right hold, and the machinery never missed a cog, and in four minutes the boy rejoined his mother at the door with such a loving expression on his face that she had to identify him by a patch on his knee. During the heated term the charges for spanking a boy with a pressure of twenty-one pounds of steam on will be thirty cents. The pins, tacks, shingle-nails, burrs, buttons and thistle-heads worked out of the cloth by tb3 spanker will be handed over to his guardian for disposal.

The machine can be worked up to a pressure of fifty-two pounds if necessary, and it has never failed yet to bring about a complete revulsion of feeling on the part of tho. victims. The following beautiful song and chorus is sung by Bijah during the operation: Hash my boy lie still and take it, It will do your system pood No use knocking you can't break it, Any more'n the last one could. The value of the practice of laying down the canes of raspberries during the winter has been illustrated in the experience" of Mr. T. H. Burgess, of Ulster County, N. the present season.

The canes of the Highland Hardy which were laid down, he says, yielded berries at least four times as large as those which were left exposed to the winter's cold. From other canes which had been laid down, the same pickers gathered twice as many basketfuls in the same time, by actual measure, as from those which had not been, so treated. The lesson is worth remembering. Horses need good care in these hot days of midsummer. They should be kept clean by frequent currying and occasional washing of the legs and feet.

The flies will cause the most inconvenience, and while working in the field some protection from them in the shape of nets or thin blankets (sheets) is a great comfort to the animals. Keep the stables clean that they may not harbor the flies or develop any bad odors. Horses that are at regular farm work need good food better than grass alone will give. Oats or ground feed of some kind must supplement the pasture at night. Scours in Calves.

This disease, the American Dairyman says, is caused by indigestion, occasioned, either by overfeeding, or by feeding sour and improper food. The remedy is very sim- Ele." Astringents should never be given ut a purgative first and then a tonic to restore the tone of the stomach. Give one ounce of castor or linseed oil; and after twenty-four hours give half this quantity, if a repetition is thought necessary. Then give a tablespoonful of the following mixture: One ounce of prepared chalk, one drachm of essence of peppermint, one drachm of tincture of once ounce of gum arabicand a pint of water. Shake it before using.

The New York Tribune gives this method of removing a corn in a younj horse's foot: Have a bar shoe made and fitted to the foot, so that it may rest not only on the whole edge of the wall but also on the bulbs of the frog. Avoid undue paring of the sole between the wall and bar over the seat of the corn, but before nailing on the shoe take the rasp and lower that heel wall, sole and bar for an inch in front of the corner, so that when the shoe is applied it will rest on the whole circumference of the foot excepting this. Do not nail on the shoe too tightly. When shod, pour a little warm tar into the effected heel and retain it by a dossel of tow. The foot should be picked out carefully every night and the tar and tow renewed when necessary.

The shoe will require resetting at the end of three weeks to prevent it from setting in on the heel and bruising it anew. It will be several shoeings before the horn that has been stained by the blood wears out, but by a persistent avoidance of renewed injury the redness will finally disappear and the foot retain the form and strength which are so seriously impaired by the sword cutting so much in vogue. Boiled Roll Pudding. In this pudding stewed dried apples, peaches, prunes, canned fruit, jams, jellies, marmalades or ripe uncooked currants, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries or huckleberries may be used. If dried fruits are used they must be prepared as directed for dried apples, carefully picked, and when spread upon the paste, must have sufficient sugar sprinkled upon them to make them palatable.

Ingredients: One quart of sifted flour; one-half pound suet, freed from fibre and chopped fine; one-half teaspoonful of salt; cold water; fruit. Put the flour into a deep dish, mix into it the suet and salt. Then add cold water gradually enough to make rather a firm paste. Mixing should be done with the hands and done quickly. Remove paste to a well floured bread board.

Dredge the paste liberally with sifted flour and roll it out into an oblong sheet about a half -inch thick. Spread the paste thickly with the fruit to within an inch of the outer edge of the dough. Roll it up; close the free edges by pressure with the fingers to prevent escape of juices. Envelop it in a cotton cloth well floured on the inside. Tie the ends firmly and tack the edge of the cloth.

Boil from one and a half to two hours. Serve hot with sauce. Reddixg's Russia Salve meets with wonderful success In, all caea of skin diseases. 44 It raises the said an enthusiastic friend about Hcnt's Rkmept. The aged and infirm are strengthened and faculties brightened by Malt Bitters.

In the New York Observer recently was an account of a young lad on whose breast a Balm-of-Gilead tree was di3-linctly photographed by a flash of lightning which struck the house where he was and the occurrence seemed so singular that it is not surprising the editors wrote to make sure of the fact before giving it notice. The Observer says: Such lightning marks are very uncommon. But still we have many recorded instances of their occurrence. In 1786, Messrs. Bossut and Leroy reported to the French Academy of Science a case of this kind, which they endeavored to account for by supposing the lightning in its passage through the bodr had forced the blood into the vessels of the skin, so that the ramifications of these vessels were visible.

And at a later date, Arago adopted the same explanation in regard to two persons who were struck by lightning near a poplar tree, the branches of which seemed marked on their breasts, though in both cases strong doubt was thrown on their theory, from the fact that the pictures on the skin so perfectly resembled trees rather than the branching of the veins. In 1812, in a village in Somersetshire, England, six sheep were killed by lightning and on the skin of each, says Chambers'' Journal, was found a very accurate description of the tree under which the animals had taken refuge. At a later date, Signor Orioli brought before a scientific congress at Naples four cases of lightning prints one of a sailor who was struck dead on board his vessel and on whose back was the distinct impression of the horseshoe that was fixed at the head of the foremast which was struck; the second of a sailor, in a somewhat similar position, who was struck by lightning, and on whose breast was the number 44, an almost exact representative of a number 44 at the end of one of the masts; the third, of a young man who had on a girdle with several gold coins in it, the images of which were imprinted by the lightning on his skin in the order they occupied in the girdle; and the fourth, of an Italian lady who was sitting near a window where there were flowers, the image of which was perfectly reproduced or printed on her leg, where it remained permanently. In the West Indies, in 18-33, a little girl, standing at a window near a maple tree, being struck by lightning, had an image of a tree imprinted on her body; and in another case, a boy climbing a tree to steel a bird's nest had on his breast an image of the tree, with the nest on one of its branches, made hy the lightning which struck him. Dr.

Franklin tells us of a similar case in 1786; and Mr. Posy, in one of the French scientific journals, mentions twenty-four well-authenticated cases of lightning impressions on the bodies of men and animals. Eight of these were impressions of trees, one of a bird, one of a cow, four of crosses, three of circles or of coins carried about on the person, two of horse shoes, one of nail, one of a metal comb and one of an armchair. But one case more would I mention, and that known to the writer, and occurring in Hartford, some sixty years ago. A Mr.

Isham, a respectable merchant of that place, was walking in the street, when a sudden and violent thunder shower came up. The lightning struck a house, the flash coming from the east of a large oak tree, on the west of which Mr. Isham was walking and on the west of which, still further on, was the house that was struck. The flash threw Mr. Isham to the ground, and when taken up he was at first thought to be dead.

But after a time as they dashed cold water over him, he revived, and lived afterwards in good health for several years. But as the effect of the lightning, a perfect image of the oak tree was found photographed on his breast, but reversed, as in the case of the lad mentioned in the paper, and as in the ordinary negatives of the photograph. The copy of the tree seemed looking very much as if made with bluish-black India ink. It was seen by large numbers of persons, but how long it remained is not remembered. Since that time the writer has seen two accounts of similar occurrences-one in Georgia, where the tree imprinted on the person struck was an oak; and the other in North Carolina, in which case the tree was a pine.

Who can satisfactorily explain such hitherto unexplained occurrences? Two Clinton (Conn.) men went fishing the other day. One of them was drowned, the other caught cold in his head and died from lockjaw, and they were both buried on the same day. THE BEST HATS DRESSING. Successful pitchers have very short lives in their positions, the most difficult at first to hit becoming easy game to the heavy hitters in about fouryears. Especially is this the case when he is put in to pitch every game for a few seasons. Batters become familiar to his balls and his different motions in delivering them. Spalding retired in his glory after a short period of sir years. Matthews lasted seven years, but faced no heavy hitters lately for any length of time.

Bond is now in his fifth successful season, but gets it hard occasionally this year, as does White, only in his third year. Nicholas went out very suddenly, but did fine work for a few seasons after 1875. Cummings was great in the days of the lively-ball. This chapter in pitcher's history teaches that the best pitcher will fail in about three years if played without relief. Two good pitchers will last a long time if changed every game.
