Moore, of my Company, left me at the right and J. A. Morlan at the left to keep a sharp watch so the enemy would not surprise us while the rest of the boys were resting. During the lull while watching, two Rebs jumped up on the works and commenced the bayonet exercise on mc. They were just above me and had every advantage.

They done all they could and so did It seemed to me an age before anyone come to my rescue. Finally Morlan discovered my condition and come to my assistance with a you, take that, as he shot one of them and the other was soon dispatched. I still have the old run that bears the scars A. R. Morlan, Clinton, 111., he will back all I have stated. I noticed in the Tribuns that one of the comrades writing seemed to think bayonets were never used but kept as a kind of scarecrow.

Well, the night of the 30th, 64, the bayonet was used and I can prove it Two things saved my life that night. First, I was extra well drilled with the bayonet I will explain: I know you remember Johnny Stewart the wild Irishman in our company. Him and myself would get out in the street with our guns every day we were in camp and drilL We made a business of it till we got to be extra in the manual of arms. Second, the timely arrival of Com. Morlan for I could not of held out long at the rate I was compelled to handle myself.

I was in every fight the 107th engaged in and one besides. If you remember, there was a detail made from our regiment at Glasgo, to go with the fifth Indiana Cavalry to Salina, on the Cumberland river. I can say what one man out of a thousand can't say and it is this: I was never excused by the Surgeon; never missed duty, was in every fight the Regiment was in. I stood guard duty for two old men, Jacob Long and Jerry Curl for nearly four months until they were discharged and did my own guard duty unless we both come on at once. I received an injury which I will never get over at Munfordsville, when we crossed the river.

I was sent back to help get the teams over. I was in the water about waist deep, lifting at a wheel. The team started and the wheeler caught the tail of my great coat and pulled me under the water. I took cold in my head, my ears gathered and broke and left me total deaf in left ear and severe in right. No one can know how 1 have suffered, oely getting $6 per month and no arrears because I did not apply sooner.

What do you think of the arrears act? Do you not think it unjust? Lots of soldiers would not ask a pension as long as they could help themselves.
