In my native county, iu New England, the highways were originally laid out s'x rods wide, but every sharp Yankee who built or relaid a fence, encroached on the highway until now there is ouly just room to pass; and as the bounds were origiually marked by a pile of cobble stjncs, a tree, or an old stump, which having disappeared, no bounds can now be found; but here in Kansas we have the U.S. Survey, and that will secure us from encroathmeut- Captaia Sperry, having signally failed on ducks, has purchased one of Waterman Adams Co s.

He returned the pocket book, received his 10, and skipped out, when it was discovered that $15 more had been taken, making Mr. Emley's loss 825. The ycung man has gone to hunt another man who will lay his pocket book down beside him while he explores his vest pocket for loose change. Mr. T.

Her father does not take the paper, although, financially, he is able to pay all our debts, and buy us every day for a year. Let every family in Russell county have a copy of the record. Neighborhood News LINCOLN COUNTY. A number of neighboring farmers, repaired to widow Estes' place on Thursday last, and plowed the ground and planted for her a good field of corn. Such acts are highly commendable, and in no place are they more frequent than among our people.

The grasshoppers, so far as this county is concerned, are things of the past- A great many were destroped by the incessant warfare made against them by the farmers, and the remainder have died or been picked up by the milions of birds. All fears are banished and all hands are happy Register. ELLIS COUNTY. One of the horny-handed grangers of Ellis county astonished the town people by driving his milch cows down Main street yoked to a wagon, last Monday. The patient creatures seemed reconciled to their changed condition-Wednesday afternoon Henry Moore, a colored man residing at Ellis, stole five guidons valued at 825 from General Carr's quarters, at tbe Post.

At half-past six in the evening of the same day, he was arrested by Sheriff Bradsley, and the flags found in his possession. By ten o'clock he had underwent his preliminary examination, and was bound over to the District Coart. Thursday noon he was arraioged be'ore the Honorable District Court, then in session; plead guilty, and was sentenced to one year in the Penitentiary, by Judge Prescott How is this for an exemplification of "swift handed justice' Within twenty hours, he committed the crime: went throurh the lower and upper courts, and received his sentence- Had there been a noon train. Friday mornidg would have found him safely ensconced in the Penitentiary. Sentinel.
