Sedan Reptjblican. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1890. Protection for Farmers. The lies that are being told about the tin-plate schedule' are a fair sample of the weapons employed against the bill throughout. It is alleged, for instance, that the increased woolen and linen duties will inevitably raise prices upon the consumer.

Arrives. The Calams have given the Farmers' Alliance a blow from which it can never recover. Republicans will never have confidence in an organization which has been used against them politically, and in disguise at that. Before election it was written on the face of passing events that the Alliance was "done up," regardless of election results. One fact is enough for me.

The gates of Castle Garden swing inward. They do not swing outward to any American laborer seeking a better country than this. During the first thirty years of our history nearly every article was made dutiable. In 1824 less than six per cent of our imports was free; in 1833 only 15 per cent of our imported goods was free; in 1842 only 27 per cent was free; 1846, the great revenue tariff year, only 12 per cent; in 1857 only 18 per cent. From 1873 down to 1883, 30 per cent only was free, and in 1889 39 per cent was free. This bill makes about one-half of them absolutely free to the people. The extent to which the bill has gone in protecting the products of the farm and in reducing the expenses of the farmer is a striking witness of the care which the Republican party has always exercised over the interests of that immense portion of our population engaged in industrial pursuits. The duty on binding-twine has been placed at seven-tenths of a cent, which is fifty per cent lower than the duty fixed in the Mills bill. The farmers of the country will realize the hollowness of the Democratic pretensions and the wickedness of Democratic falsehoods when they consider that, whereas under the Mills bill every one of their products was placed upon the free-list or left with the affliction of a revenue duty, and almost all of their necessities heavily taxed, by the McKinley bill increased protection has been accorded them for everything they have to sell, and lower duties established upon substantially everything they tion.

It is believed that the damage is general and that all fields sown in September will have to be plowed up and the grain put in again.
