Hooper by nsme. a single man 21 yean old, has got himself into trouble ai into jail As near as We can learn, the circumstances are about, as follows The aforesaid agent had failed to make his regular report for several days, and the Auditor of the road came down to investigate him. The agent, getting wind of this movement, took what loose money there was in the office and skipped out. He borrowed a horse from Mr. Raider, and came over to this city, where he left tbe horse at a livery stable and hired Smith Sl Lee to take him to Chautauqua Springs, where he said his brother wan lay ing at the point of death.

He left How ard about 5 o'clock on the evening of December 13th. On arriving at Piedmont a few hours after the agent had left, the Auditor' after taking in the situation, got a team and came on to Howard, arriving about midnight. In company with sheriff Thompson, he started in pursuit, and next morning about eight o'clock they arrived at Chautau qua Springs and captured their man. The Auditor says Hooper is about $800 short in his account with the road, and when arrested he had about $400 in his possession. Hooper is a good looking, well educated young man, but given to drinking, gambling and writing poetry.

He says that he and three or four of his chums at Piedmont got away with about ninegallons of whisky a week on an average. He was slightly intoxicated when arrested. He was well armed and thought he was out of danger; a letter to a friend sard; "I am off for good this time am in the Nation and you will never hear from me again."
