So oar Republican contemporaries of Sedan and Independence may console themselves with the reflection that "where ignorence is bliss 'tis folly to be wise" But the Chautauqua county republicans don't propose to be put off this way, Bro. 8tewart.

There are a "great many intelligent republicans in the party here, who (though in a bad cause, which is rapidly growing worse) propose to have light on the tariff question, or have their party organs acknowledge their ignorance on a question so important. As we predicted, the circus last week filled the town with thieves and swindlers. We had supposed that people were getting too smart Jp be swindled; but we guess there are some that enjoy it. It happens to be a class, too, that is least able to bear such losses. In looking over a crowd around a fakir, we find the poorest dressed and most ignorant young men betting against the fakirs game.

We are opposed to the principle of prohibition, but we are sometimes led to think that the world would be better if some people were pro hibited the right to use the money they earn. If the gudgeons had no money to handle the swindlers and fakirs would have to earn their bread by the sweat of their faces.
