L. HUEY, A. to the honorable commissioner of Indian affairs that the Kaw tribe of Indians dines well. Let a French woman bo rich or poor the mistress of a mansion in tho Champs Elyseos or of a poor fifth floor little flat at Montmarte or Batig-nollos she has always the charm of femininity. She is always smart, always alert, and has a fluttering, bustling way with her that is bound to keep awake your interest in all she does.

She may sometimes be a little affected, but she is never vulgar. On' Sundays and holidays she dresses still a littlo more elegantly than usual, but sho never appears to be in Sunday clothes. The middle-class French woman is ladylike not only in her dress, but in her speech. You will never see hep loaded with cheap jewelry, this great stamp of vulgarity; and when she speaks to you you can not guess whother she ia the wife of a gentleman or a small tradesman. Notice that she often changes the style of her hair.

That is because she knows that love lives on trifles, and that tho best dishes become Insipid if they are always served with the same sauco. Even if her stock of clothes aro scanty her clever brain and fingers help her to cover its deficiencies by constant little changes. With twq or three dresses in hor possession the dear littlo humbug will make you be-lievo that sho has a well-filled wardrobe. From Max O'Rell's Book. A dainty pretty for baby's uso may be made as follows.

Crochet ono strip (either in afghan or shell stitch) of white zephyr nine or ten inches wide, and the desired length. Embroider daisies of gold with white heart down the center of this strip. Then make two more of the same length and widih, of a delioate blue. Embroider daisies of white with golden hearts down the center of these. I'lactr'the white strip in the middlo with a blue strip on each side; join together with gold railroad-stich.

This forms a rich eli ain where the fastening comes. Make a border of some open stich which will permit a ribbon of delicate blue or gold to be run in and out around the entire edge. If you prefer you may fasten the strips together or the ribbon may be run in and out where joined. Finish with a fringe four inches deep. Make in clusters, say six blue, six white, etc.

Another dainty afghan may be made ot white basket cloth. Cut the cloth the desired size. Then, have the edge seal loped in deep points, each point being 'pinked." In the center embroider a wreath of daisies and forget-me-nots in Arasena, or, if you prefer, daisies end wild roses. Sew a frill of Torchon or Antique lace around the edges so that it will fall in a ruffle beneath the scallops. If you have for get-me-nots make a large bow of pale-blue ribbon and fasten to the upper right-hand corner of the afghan.

If you have wild roses make the bow of a del i -eate rose pink. These last two are delicate, and will not stand hard usage without becoming soiled. You may use more serviceable colors, bet follow the general instructions, and have pretty and, doubtless, more useful afghans.
