He had bean subpoaoced at bis New Jersey home by Sergeant-at-Arms Walsh, and had come to testify with reference to some of General Stone's statements to the Commission when it was in Leavenworth. General John Fremont took the stand. He said he had, with Goneral Ewing and others, paid for the Leavenworth, Pawnee Western railroad in 1860. It had then titles to certain Indian lands and some preliminary surveys. There was scarcely any construction then.

In 1864 be became leatranged from one of 'his colleagues and retired, receiving about what he had paid. He never had a hand in buying votes and knew nothing of any suoh Improper use of money. "You were not in the business of buying votes at that timet" put In one of the Commissioners. 'No; about the time of these alleged transactions I was pretty actively engaged in the field," replied the General with smile. He then retired and, at his own request, General Thomas Ewing took the stand and made this statement: "I have asked tbia opportunity to make a statement respecting my connection with the Leavenworth, Pawnee St Western Railroad Company, which in 1863 became a branch of the Pacific railway, and especially to tell what I know about certain contracts, alleged to have been made by that committee In aid of the passage of the first Paciflo railroad that of 1862.

James Heed and William Ramsey, two negroes living at Warrensburg, who were beating their way home from Kansas City on the front end of the baggage oar, were instantly killed. General Stone is reported to have testified that they were prepared In the fall of 1863, a year and a half after I had ceased to participate in the affairs of the company. I never heard of one-fifth of the contracts named in these lists. More than half the names in them are of persons I knew or met. Whatever contracts may have been made by any of the gentlemen named while the Paciflo railroad bill was pending in Congress before I went to Washington and after I left there I know nothing about them. Killed the Woman He Loved, Special to Wichita Dally Democrat. LwoLti, Sept. 28. Heinrioh Beer shot and killed Augusta Seifert near the Bnrliugton and Missouri depot about six o'clock this evening. Two shots were fired both of whioh took effect, and the girl died instantly.

Beer then placed the weapon to his own head and pulled the trigger, but supposed to have been lyncnod Dy coloreq Masons because he had killed one of their number. John Hard-castle, a farmer living near Mountain View, Stone County, with a large family dependent on his labor for support, some time ago had trouble with a neighbor about the ownership of a drove of bogs and was warned to leave the country. He started to move, taking bis effects In a wagon. Five men followed him, and two of those, conoeallng themselves in the underbrush along the rcadside, called to him, denouncing him as a hog thief, and daring him to leave the wagon. He seized his gun and advanced toward the spot, when the men in ambush opened fire on him, filling his body, head and arms with buckshot. The assassins are under arrest.

Rumor connects them with an organization similar to the Bald Knobbers of Missouri. TWO SLEEPI.NO MSN MURDERED. Sam Fbanoisoo, Sept. 26. At Indian Valley, about two hundred miles south, John MoArdle and J.

C. Reardon attempted to file on a land claim previously entered by Newton Azbell, the two former claiming there waa a defoot in the lattor's papers. A bitter dispute arose, and yesterday Ax-bell went to the cabin built by MoArdle and Rearden and shot the men while they were in bed. They died Instantly. The murderer, who is a man of family and had hitherto borne a good reputation, surrendered himself to officers lute in the day.

So far be refuses to talk. REVOLT OI CONVICT MINERS. Kkoxville, Sept. 26. A mutiny of convicts is reported at tne Knoxville Iron Company's coal mines at Coal Creek.

They refused to go in the mines Saturday and the guards opened fire on them, wounding three or four, one probably mortally. The cause of the trouble is said to have been the refusal of the superintendent to move the coal away from the mouth of the pit, thus proventing the free circulation of air. A VILLAIN. Dover, N. The United States Mint was established in 1793, yet the dollar was the monetary unit seven yoars previous to that time. It was not until 1701 that the coining of dollars began.

Regular stage lines were first established in this country, between New York and Philadelphia, in 1756. In 1773 the first trips were made between Now York and Boston. The clock business in America was begun in 1793 by Eli Terry, a Connecticut man. The first form of clock constructed by him had wooden wheels. In 1814 he invented the first short shelf-clock.

Boston's first theater was opened in "Board Alley" in 1792 and was called the "New Exhibition Room." The first piece presented was called a "moral lecture," and was entitled "Dougla9." Plays in this theater were often interrupted by the sheriff in support of the State statutes. The name of the magnet is said to have sprung from an ancient Greek shnpherd named Magnes, who discovered that tha iron of his staff adhered to some dark-colored stones in his pastures. To Friar Roger Bacon, of Oxford, in 1258, is attributed the first practical knowledge of the magnetic power.
