The school house preceeding the present one was a small one story stone building, containing but one room and located about one-half mile east of town, and through the, rapid growth which the town has made, had become inadequate to teach the young idea "how to shoot." The present school house is a large and commodious one for the present size of the town, but we dare say it will not be in a few short years more. Wells will take a trip to Abilene and Salina on business the latter part C-O-A-L, THE SOTOOL BUILDING'. Prof. Pickens having been engaged as principal of the schools for the ensiling year, will, without doubt, give Dorrance one of the best schools in Russell county, and we doubt if it will be surpassed by any town in the state; with a population five times its size. The Prof, comes here well recommended, being a graduate of the State Normal school in forty different branches. He and his wife have conducted the teachers' institute in Russell county for several years and this is the third institute they have conducted this year.

Both of them have also been teaching in the normal school at this state. Prof. Picken will build a residence on the north side of Dorrance at once and we feel confident that they will prove beneficial to the society of our town. Our school will be greatly improved during the coming winter in all its branches and pupils who wish to take other branches than those taught heretofore, can now have the opportunity of doing so. In fact, many of those thinking of going away to college will find that they can be benefitted equally Frederick Ehrlich H.E.25,2S1 for the el -4 sec.
