The hones of the ice men are again fulling as the ice-floes on the river begin to break up and float away. Topeka will be short of ice in the summer of 1882, if we do not have some cold weather before long.

It looks a little odd to see all of a bug gy except the wheels going along on run ners. The idea of sleighriding with a top over the vehicle to keep off the beat of the sun, seems rather anomalous. Why can't we have an antt-polygamy meeting and organize a society? Then we can talk about )ie "Scarlet robed harlot that sits enthroned on the hills of Utah." If such a Bociety should be for med, Hon Dudley C. Haskell would, it is pretty certain, cons' nt to act aspermanent president.

This would help the Topeka 'boom." A great sup ply of paints, oils, varnishes and other materials of like nature have been brought Into the building and within a few weeks a wonderful change will be visible in the interior of the west wing. Some complaint is heard this morning from people who think themselves "taken in" by the "Jollities" last night.

It is too bad that eur innocent and highly re spectable Tepekans should be inveigled into a variety theatre, and then feel bad because they didn't know it. Electrical dolls and economical petticoats, are sel dom to be found in the regular drama, and it is a good thing to be shy of troupes traveling under such name as Pleasure Parties," "Humpty Dumpty," etc. Tollee Conrt. Van Lect and Saunders, the former from Denison, Iowa, the latter from New York, were arrested as tramps last night Both of them are track laborers and un able to get work. W. Horsier, the dairyman, was no sensation after all. That paper states that letters have been received from Campbell's relatives in the east, say ing that nothing had been heard of him and expressing fears that he has been foully dealt with. The Co-mmonwealth adds that Mr. Horsier and other friends are of the same opinion.

At the time that Campbell disappeared, tho Frets gave the facts, after careful investigation and it has not as yet had occasion to change the opinion then given, that there were grave fears that the young man had been murdered for his money. The Pkess has received communications from a number of ladies, also from number of gentlemen, in regard to the treatment of the tramps by the marshal his assistants. These communications all speak of the conduct of the of ficials as unwarranted by the circum stances and as they term it "An abuse of power. The bess is in some difficulty know which of these communications publish, as it is impossible to make room for all of them. Ujider these cir cumstances it has been determined to re ject the whole lot, as the Pbess gave all the facts in the case on Saturday last.

The Pbess considers it a sacred duty to give voice to puDiic sentiment ana re gardless of who may deserve criticism, will ever be found true to the best interests of The Punas is not un mindful of the high honor that these numerous ladies and gentlemen confer and nothing short of the impossibility of devoting, the space to the subject prevent the publication. The DAVIS FIUR KPCAPK is a simple and cheap contrivance which nnv person is rich enough to own; it is small enough to bo carried in an over coat pocket; and it is so perfect an inven lion that It cannot fail in successful opera tion. ritOKERSOR DAVIS, the inventor, will give a free public hibition of this wonderful and simple 1 vention in operation at tho Windsor House, Topeka, at 7 o'clock p. m.

Wed nesday evening Febuaryl, 1883. The value and safety of the oscapo will be do monstrutcd by one or more practical tests, of persons escaping from windows of the FIFTH STOUT in presence of the people on the outside Evory room of the Windsor above the second floor will be furnished with one of these fire escapes, and the people may see for themselves at this exhibition how easily and safely the machine works. A new Institution Among the many improvements an new institutions of which Topeka has reason to feel justly proud. "The Kansas Surgical Hospital," is one which worthy and much needed. Kansas has heretofore sent a large mount of surgical work out of the state to be done by exports in eastern cities sueh as Chicago, St.

Louis, and even Boston and New York. Our new state has never enjoyed first class facilities for the treatment of any important surgical cases, and in view of these facts a num ber of live citizens have decided to cstab lisli and maintain a first class surgical hospital for the treatment of strictly sur gical cases. Accordingly, a few days since Dr. Henry W. Uoby, Edward Wilder, Geo.

W. Yeale, Thos. 8. Lyon, Orvill T. Welch and J.

W. Hartzcll applied for and received charter from the State for the above named Institution and the hospital is al ready receiving patronage and encourage went from many parts of the state. Dr. Henry Rofcy is the surgeon in chargi and the incorporators have engaged the celebrated Dr. Boynton, (President "Gar field cousin) as consulting surgeon With such a combination of business and professional talent the success of the en terprise is assured beyond a doubt, and the people of Kansas need no longer go beyond the state line fer any surgery, We have inspected the hospital and find it amply supplied with all the modern surgical appliances so necessary to first class treatment, and we commend it the public.
