Car Crawford. The case of Car Crawford who was brought up in Justice Reed's court to-day charged with indecently assaulting Susan Johnson, colored, has been turned over to Justice Hazen of venue. All the witnesses were preacise and were told to appear before Justice Hazen, next Thursday, at nine o'clock, when the case will be heard. Whether the colored people have gained any advantage by having the case placed before Justice Hazen is rather dubious, but they seemed to think that Justice Reed is prejudiced. Cole vs.

Barnes. John P. Cole this morning fled a complaint in Justice Reed's court, charging Lewis N. Barnes an attempt to mail by means of threatening letters. From papers filed with the justice the following facts were learned.

Mr. Barnes, who sometime ago attempted to divorce from his wife, has written several letters to Mr. Cole, charging him with having criminal relations with his her, and demanding money for his silence. Mr. Cole at once resented the accusation by bringing the matter into court.

The case will be heard next Saturday, De cember 24. Mrs. Martin Anderson's Birthday. On Saturday evening, the Modoc Club, Major. T.

J. Anderson in command, paid a visit to the residence of Mr. Martin An derson, on Sixth street, just beyond the city limits. The occasion was the sixtysecond birthday of Mrs. Anderson, the mother of Major Tom.

The club started from the music store of Slie Fox, calling at Swift Holliday's, then at Funk where members of the club were picked up, until sixteen persons were loaded into the large bus belonging to the Topeka Omnibus Company. While waiting for one or two members to part their back hair before starting, the club sang. some songs, which was the occasion of a large At last gathering the of word people on the avenue. "go" was given, when the prancing steeds took the bits, and away to the westward they flew. Nearing the residence of Mr.

Anderson, was passed to the driver to approach noiselessly, which order was carefully obeyed. Arriving in front of the residence, the members of the club noiselessly. allighted and quickly passed across the lawn and formed in a circle near the front door. At a signal "Sherman's March to the Sea" burst on the still night air. The boys were in good voice and the effect of the singing was very I I I I I I pleasing especially to the good people in whose honor this was given.

At the end of the first verse, the front door opened and the comely form of Mrs. Anderson appeared; the song went on, while she stood in the doorway waiting to welcome the thoughtful young men who had come to do her honor. The song finished, Major Tom led the way into the house, where each was kindly received and welcomed. It was plain to be seen that Mrs. Anderson felt kindly toward these friends of her son and everything passed off as pleasantly as could be wished.

Prof. Frary presided at the piano and Prof. Fox led in singing. Some of the best songs from the Modoc collection were when they were invited to the dining room, where they did ample Justice to a bountiful repast, after which there was more singing conversation; when the club wished Mrs. Anderson many happy returns of the occasion, and turned their faces homeward.
