We can learn with resignation that Columbus first put foot upon Watljng's island Instead of San Salvador. We are not soriously shocked when we hear that Wllllom Tell is a myth, and the serenity of our minds is not disturbed by the allegation that Bacon wrote Shakespeare's plays; but when a ruthless Iconoclast comes up from Wichita to tell us that our Rocky Mountain sheep, that has so long been the chief attraction at the State Museum is nothing but the skin of an antelope stuffed, it is the straw that break the camel' back.

When will this destruction of our time-honored heart's idols stop? Will these destroyer continue in their headlong path until an angry public rises in its ire and fire them up the golden stair? Who is thl man Mead, of Wichita, who dares to beard the Rocky Mountain sheep in his den? I he a native of the great Arkanmw valley? If he is what does he know about mountains? Let him go to the hardy mountaineers who brought us that sheep, and unless he holds a full hand of "derringers" those hardy mountaineers will swindle the him with mining stock.for daring to doubt what all Kansas has believed without question. POJLIilEF The New Opera Houm. The aew Opera House shows up bigger and bigger. It is to cost $20,000 now, and after another meeting the cost will probably rise another $10,000, after the oaan ner of most of our public buildings, more especially those built by Government appropriation. But this is perfectly right. An Opera House costing $50,900 would be quite as acceptable as one costing Our citizens are jeeogrtizing the fact that in a city growing like Topcka they must build for the future, and the morn beautiful and commodious our great public institutions are, the lanre surely will the city irfcrease in population and wealth.

Theold plans of the Jree Library building, which were rejected because of their Rmallness, are lobe used with slight modifications by the mw Opera IIouso Company. The front is to be in Ashler design that thin slabs of stone laid on the outside of the real brick wall. The trimmings will Se of red brick with trimmings of block mortar. It will be a very handsome Dulldiig as to exterior, and the interior is to tilled up in a sumptuous manner. Id fast it is to be one of the prettiest tfieators In the West.
