TOPEKA DAILY DEMOCRAT, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1881. WATSON I THRAP GEiJERAL E1EAL Ills 110 KANSAS AVENUE, OPPOSITE CO'JRrFi" i i 1 ANN AH. Leavenworth County which gave Garfield 503 majority elects on tho Democratic ticket, Nielm.un for County Clerk; (Jar-ten Register of Deeds Lyrich Coroner, and rrolmbly Moonlight, Sheriff. Nemaha County, giving Garflold a majority of 810, elects James Martiu, Democrat, Sheriff. Pottowatomle, Garfield's majority 73fl, elects a Democratic Sheriff, Treasurer and Register of Deeds.

Shawnee County, which (jave Garfield a majority of 2,732, manages to pull George T. Gilinore through for County Clerk, regular Republican by a small majority, while Bush, Irregular Republican has a small plurality over McCall. Gil-more carries every ward of tho city. Silver Lake, Soldier and Mission townships. Barton County, with a majority of 300 for Uarficd, elects Democrats for Treasurer, County Clerk, Probate Judge and Coroner.

Oullols, tlie Joseph N. DuBois, a hide and wool dealer of Kansas City, two years ago forged eight bills f'i lading for wool, valued at purporting to be consigned to HollleldJc. Goislor, of Jiullulo, and then drew iipihi them for $22,100 for which he was forgiven upon paying the amount. Last week a representative of Horner of Boston, Mr. Asbum, was in Kansas City to see about a matter of $30,000 that DuBois had drawn on them far, and the bill of lading went with the draft, but the stock was never shipped.

Upon being punched up he paid some $10,000, and now that DuBois has skipped out, the firm is out about $20,0011, as the original bills of lading were forgeries. Harding, Martin of Boston, and Smith Fossett, of New York, are severe losers by DuBois. Two months ago, a bill of lading accompanied a draft on Whitney Graham, of Chicago, and when the stock, which was wool, arrived, it was largely snort, and another consignment having been made it was still 2,000 pounds short. Tho same scheme was tried on Goets Lieuining, tanners, of Milwaukee, the draft being for $10,000. More and more of these crooked transactions are coining out, his favorite methods of operating being to send drafts to which would be attached forged bills of lading; to underweigh and to sprinkle the wool with water, DuBois family though in Kansas City cannot be found.

Hardy, Democrat, micecmlH tlie late Per naudo Wood, deccnil, and the succssors to Lapham and Miller are Republicans, making a Democratic gain of one In the delegation, and the organl.aon of the next Houso of Representatives is thereby placed In doubt. Connecticut has fifty-nine Republican majority In the Legislature on joint ballot as against ninety-live of lust year. Massachusetts, with a very light vote, stands about tho same, relatively, as last year, the Prohibitionists and Greenbuck-ers making small gains and tho Republicans making a gain in Boston, and a slight loss in their si ength in the Legislature. Now Jersey secures a small Republican majority in both brandies of the Legislature. Pennsylvania probably elects Baily, Republican, State Treasurer by a small plurality, over Noble, Democrat, but Wolfe, Independent Repuolican, has a vole reaching towards 75,000, which is a protest against the Cuineroniloyt-Qnay intu'hjne.

Illinois had some local elwlions. Cook county elects three Democratic County Commissioners, one Independent Demo crat aud one Republican. Joseph E. Gray, Democrat, elected Judge without opposition. Wisconsin elects a Democratic State Treasurer, and the Republicans have the rest of the Slate ticket by a very small majority, as would now appear, though the Democratic State Central Committee claim the whole ticket.

The Prohibition vote is estimated to be from 10.000 to 12, 000. Minnesota has a greatly reduced vote, with Republican gains and losses mak ing just about an offset. Nebarska has developed a strong anti-monopoly feeling, and though the organization jf the Farmers' Alliance is but recent, they have polled a heavy vote. Douglass county, in which Omaha is situated, gives some 500 majority. Colorado voted on the location of the State Capitol, the places voted for being Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo; Denver having a plurality.

The matter goes over another year. The Republicans triumphed in Denver on their municipal ticket. Maryland gives Keating, Democrat, for State Comptroller, about 15,000 majority; tho Democrats having a large majority in the Legislature. Virginia is claimed by both gubernatorial candidates, though Daniels, regular Democrat, seems to have the best showing from the returns received Both elements claim gains in members of the Legislature. Mississippi reports sweeping Democratic majorities, though the county in which Vicksburg is situated elects the county fusion ticket.

In many portions of the State tho colored voters worked for and voted the Democratic ticket. ESTATE AGEflTS, SALE. Ootobor 28th, 18K1. The Bushwhackers seem to have paid a tetter price for votes yesterday than the McCallites. The household effects of the Garfield family were yesterday removed from the White House to Mentor.

The floods in the Badger State seems to have cut down the Democratic vote more that tlie Republican. The Capital insists that it has a boom and that said book is "solid." This will be news to newspaper readers. The negroes of Mississippi, on yesterday, voted the Democratic ticket quite largely. Tlie facts are that their eyes arc being opened in their true interests. Wlitt has Jimmy Mahone done with all that money that Republican raised for him to elect his Repudiators with? He doesn't seem to have bought so many votes after all.

There is likely to be a collision between rhe President and Attorney-General Mc-Veagh. The Grant crowd have already felt the force of the hitter's pen, and may again feel its point. Good for Pottawatomie. Tho Democratic candidates fared well there. Gill-ner, Democratic candidate for Treasurer was elected by au overwhelming majority.

Sheriff Graham is a Democrat, so also is Register of Deeds Nagle. Senator Vest believes that Blaine will receive the Republican nomination in 1884, and that Conkling will regain his Jost ground. We cannot see how both these things can be brought about. Blaine may succeed, but it will be on Conkling's downfall, if Conkling regains his past influence Blaine can never succeed. As has already been announced, Guit-eau's defense will be insanity.

His counsel, Scovillc, yesterday morning appeared in the Criminal Court and requested that a batch of papers, a book with annota tions and a. letter addressed to him by Guiteau, be delivered to him, staling, at the same time, that they would be needed to sustain the plea of insanity. The most accurate computation of damages caused by the breaking of Sny levee and the Mississippi overflow, yet made, is as follows In the Warsaw drainage district, $000,000 Indian Grove district, Suy Island district, $1,000,000 Quincy City and Bay. in and around Alexandria, $250,000 railroad property, $160,000 total, $3,500,000. The water is receeding very slowly.

THE ELECTIONS. New York asks the country to look at ber magnificent rebuke of the perjurers, bribegivers and bribe takers, who sat in and hovered around the protracted ses sion of the last Legislature. The "Garfield Republicans" alias the Half-breeds have shown their utter inability to run a campaign and their plaintive wail to the Stalwarts at the eleventh hour. "Help us Cassius, or we sink," proves ludicrous indeed, especially in the scratching that has been done on the bald-headed eagle of Westchester, James W. for Slate Treasurer on Silas Seymour, the, ancient Know Nothing and canal-jobber for State Engineer and Surveyor i and on the "Tweedish" Senator Davenport for Comptroller.

The World puts the State Senate 17 Democrats, 15 Republicans the Assembly 68 Democrats, 00 Republicans, which shows a trremen-dous revolution in the The indications are that the Democrats! have elected their entire State ticket and they elect Roswell Flower member of Congress from the city over William W. Astor by 2.000 majority, as successor to Levi P. Morton, appointed Minister to Prance, which is a Democratic gain. Assuredly, tho belief in the gullibility of John Bull must 1 very great to war-rant the publication in the lending London papers of tho following advertisement; THE I.ATE IMtHSIDfCNT OARPIEM). The wish lias been widely expressed to commemorate the kindly sympathy expressed from the highest to the lowest with the United States under the National Sorrow. It is proposed. Therefore that the statue of the Right Hon. W.

E. Gladstone, M. by Mr. A. Bruce Joy, which is now ready for casting, and which is to be erected in the metropolis, shall be cast in dublicate, and bo presented to the United States and erectediu Washington.

It is proposed that the Figure shall represent England and Wales; that the Pedestal shall be of Scotch Granite, thus representing Scotland, and that the base shall be of Irish Granite, thus representing Ireland. It is further proposed that one of the panels shall contain a Medallion bust of the late Peesidont, and tlie corresponding pannel a bust of our own good Queen Victoria. The cost of the above would about 3,000, and it will afford me genuine pleasure to re ceive and account for any moneys that may be entrusted to mo to carry out the above purpose. Faithfully and obediently, T. II.

BltYAST. Fairfield Works, Bow, London. When, and under what circumstances, any artist was employed to make a statute of W. E. Gladstone," "now ready for casting, which is to be erected in the metropolis" (London) has not transpired.

Nor is there even a plausible pretence for urging that it should be cast in duplicate, at a cost of three thousand pounds, and "presented to the United States and erected in Washington. It cannot be because Gladstone was one of the British Ministers who, in 1861 65, openly sided with the slave-holding interest, and declared in Parliament and in public meetings that the Federal Union ot America bad tailed, and mat detier son Davis had created a new republic in the South." At that self-same date Lord Derby and Mr. Disraeli loyally adhered. in and out of Parliament, to the' United States. It can scarcely be denied that it has always been regarded as in the worst nos sible taste to erect a man's statue during hia lifetime, inasmuch as a popularity is capricious, and the statue which might tie garlanded with Iaruel and everlasting in January be polled with mud only six months later.

As for having- England. Scotland, and Ireland represented by grauito slabs, the idea is ridiculous. Gladstone is the reverse of popular in great Britain, and his existing relations with Ireland, which he has placed under martial law, besides placing two or three hundred of her most valued patriots and pumicists in prison, are sucli mat Irish men, as a nation, couple his unhonorcd name with those of Castlereagh and Chancellor Clare. From whom the localization of a Glad stone statue in Washington may have emanated is a mystery. Bryant who signs lue advertisement, is tounder, we believe, and seems to nave a sreat deal of brass in his nature.

It may be as well to know that the American people, would never allov? a statue of Gladstone, the enemy of Irclaud upon any pedaslal save that of shame. lnh world.
