to the proceedings. A Visitor Gives Us Advice. W. It. Harris, of Omaha, called this morning to inquire about an item which appeared in the Daily Press a few days ago protesting against the so-called "glovo contest" which was advertised to take plaeo in this city May 22d.

He said it had the effect of squelching the "contest," the olllcors interfering after tho mayor had given his consent. He thought it was very, vory wrong for a paper to pay any attention to such things. What a newspaper ought to do was to keep quiet and say nothing. If anybody didn't want to attend such exhibitions they could stay away, and would not be harmed, In fact, he gave us a large amount of gratuitous advice as to the duties and responsibilities of a newspaper man, for which we kindly thank him, but, at tho same time, we an of the opinion that slugging matches of tho character he champions will not soon become popular in Girard not if the Press can help it. Oh, yes, and ho told us we had better got rid of our whiskey joints, and we agreed with him.

Will the mayor and city marshal pleaso make a note of the fact that distinguished strangers who visit the city say there are joints here. Queen City Chapter, O. E. had an enjoyable meeting last night. The members of the ordor took advantage of the temporary sojourn of Mrs.

Elizabeth Magie, of Girard, the PastGrand Matron, in their midst, and arranged for a special meeting, which was well attended, and two candidates initiated under the very able supervision of the Past Grand Matron. Sister Magie gave the members some timely and instructive lessons in the beautiful ceremonies of tho order, and highly complimented our chaptor on the high degree of perfection they have attained in the work and on its steady and healthy growth. Mrs. Magie takes great pride in Queen City Chapter, and her Interests in Win-field fraternity are more than ordinary. First, the chapter was constituted during her administration and under her personal supervision next, the order has a ward in the asylum in whose interest and welfare Mrs.

Magie takes an especial interest, and in her absence the duty is faithfully performod by the members of our local chapter. Winfield Courier. Jacob Bubd, the rustler of Sherman township, is in town.
