Our first impressions were, that this war was unnecessary, cruel, selfish simply one ambitious, grasping, unscrupulous power throwing its great strength against another power, whose history is the same. Our only hope in this war is that united France and united Germany will find better systems of government than standing armies, irresponsible and imperial monarchs, and the power to plunge millions of men into armed combat at the whim of any ambitious captain or statesman. There is a higher destiny for these great nations than Bonaparte and Hohenzollern, and this may be a blessed war if they only succeed in reaching it.

She had a vine of orange flowers on her hair, which was very prettily arranged. The effect of her dress was simply charming, and was universally commended.

The groom was attired in the usual manner black coat and pantaloons, white vest, tie and gloves. Though in the Episcopal form, the marriage service was very brief, occupying only ten minutes. Dr. Edson, who married General Butler, and baptized and confirmed his daughter, performed the ceremony, attended by four other clergymen attired in surplices. The whole ceremony passed off quickly and smoothly, and at 8:40 the bridal party passed out, the organ pealing forth a wedding march, and the audience generally standing, to obtain a good glimpse of the groom and bride.

The party proceeded at once to the General's house, which is located on a commanding eminence, about a mile from the church. The grounds were illuminated, and resented a brilliant appearance. We suggest that this corporation has inaugurated a system of opposition to the payment of their taxes which cannot be regarded as other than frivolous and technical. The company restrained the collection of these taxes by suits in the United States Circuit Court in 1867 and 1S68 upon the ground that the property of the road was not subject to taxes by the State of Kansas. During the pending of these suits, the officers of the company frequently assured the local authorities that if it should finally be adjudged that the State had the power to tax their property, they would not offer further opposition, but would pay the accrued taxes whenever that question should be finally determined.

One suit, as a test, was taken to the Supreme Court of the United States. That Court, tha highest in the land, passed upon the question last Spring, and decided emphatically that the property of the road was subject to be taxed, the same as other property in the State. Hence Jadge Dillon, at the last term of the United States Circuit Court, rendered judgment against the complainants in all of the several suits Instituted by them in that Court. This ought to have termineted the opposition of the company to the collection of these taxes. Further resistance being purely technical, was to our minds evidently without Justification, even if the assessment was irregular, by reasou of bavin been made by the Mortgages, and otlter Blanks always on hand at the office oi Hard Times.
