Postmaster T. D. Fitzpatriek has prepared his report for the last quarter of the year 1905, and while the figures show a gain of only $5.51 over the same period for last year, a comparison of the figures of the four quarters of 1905 with those of 1904 shows a gain of $256.45. This represents a gain that compares favorably with the average gains made in all Kansas towns in the postoflice business. The business done in Salina is much greater than in most towns in 4 40 ers in charge.

The rural route business is increasing daily and the reports of the work done on the six rural routes out of Salina show a large gain over the preceding year.

Rural route No. 1 is a fair sample of what has been done in this city. Mr. J. A.

Mesler, the carrier, in his report for the year, shows that he handled 79,401 pieces of mail, he delivering to 'his patrons 72,027 pieces and collecting 0,774 pieces. A large part of the mail delivered consisted of newspapers, they numbering 48,579, a feature of the report which speaks highly for the intelligence of the people of Saline county. Thirteen thousand, five hundred and two letters were delivered, while postal cards, circulars and packages make up the rest of the total number. rMr. Mesler collected 5,971 During the year he sold to the patrons of his route stamps to the value of $153.38.

Yhat is being done on all rural routes out of Salina may be judged from the figures given for route No. 1. Has 15,000 Patrons. There is received in this city mail for about 15,000 people. Some idea may be formed of what the labors of the postoflice clerks are when it is said they must know almost where everyone of these 15,000 people live.

There are five city routes and six rural routes from the Salina post-office, and when a letter is received there the clerk who handles it must know on which route it belongs and whether it goes to the general delivery or into a private box. Of the 1,040,010 pieces of mail handled in the Salina offce, it is estimated that 435,762 pieces were sent out on the rural routes, leaving 1,204,610 pieces of Lucretia Armstrong, deceased.
