As the Eustis people are always ready to hollow bad title to every piece of land in Sherman county that does not meet their approval, it will not be out of place to say a word about the Eustis title. The town is situated on four 40ties the se of ne and ne of se of section 17; the sw of nw and nw of sw of section 16, town 8, range 39. The section line is their main street north and south and the half section line the main street east and west. Where these two streets cross is the center of the town and the business part.

All the land for half a mile north and south of the half section line on the east side of Main street is owned by the Gandies, taxed to them and publisdi-ed in their name for delinquent tax as the following in the Dark Horse of last week will show: Offtcjb op of Shfjrmax vr Eustis, 28, 1887. Notice is hereby given that taxes for the year i860 on the following town lots remain due and unpaid, and so much of cavh lot or parsel of land as maybe necessary will be sold at the court house at public sale on the first Tuesday of September, 1887 and the next succeeding for said taxes, costs and penalties. J. II. Tait, Treas.

Sherman Co. M. E. Gandy, sw qr sec 1 0-8-09. Tax 7.54.

F. T. Gandv, nw qr sec 1G-8-39. Tox 7.04. M.

E. Gandy is the wife of Dr. J. L. Gandy, and the land taxed to her is the southeast quarter of the Eustis town site and to which the Eustis people have no title.

The 2sews showed to its readers last fall that Dr. Gandy was interested in Eustis and the cry was raised, by the Dark Horse that he owned the Center to keep the truth hid about his land and lots in and around Eustis, and Tait lied to the people through the columtis of his paper all summer about it. There is also a break in the chain of title on the other two quarters, as the final receipts for them are not on record, or was not in November 188G. The Eustis people are the last persons, on earth to review the title question! John Shirkey is sick mountain fever; Grandpa Shirkey thinks people Ought to in their clothes lines after dark. Rev.

Joseph A. Hussell will preach at Clark's hall to-night. All are invited. Scott Neal received several baskets of yesterday, from his old home in iNebraskal IT. SI Swisher," 0-38, and C.

D. Watts, called on us yesterday andjjghtened our labors with two big watermelons. sai rr r. Sherman County. To those who contemplate coming west either for the purpose of engaging in farming or in mcrantile pur -uits, we would most heartily recommend northwestern Kansas, and more specially Sherman county.

This county, which two year ago had hut a very few settlers, now has i population of more than live thousand. The soil is a rich loam, similar to that of northeastern Kansas slid southeastern Nebraska. While localities farther east have suffered i.h entire los Of crop from drouth this year we haVe had an abundance rain with the exception of about wo weeks in the fore part if August. Yc have just had ah abundant rain lasting two dayls, putting the ground in excellant condition for fall plowing and breaking, and for sowing all wheat and rye. The farmers are lii goo'l spirit and the prospects for good autumn trade among the merchants could not be better than iiow.

There is a larger area of smooth, tillable land in this than in any county the same size in Kansas. The prairie is covered with green grass, which affords the finest pasturage. Dur rtfads are splendid. However protracted a drouth may come upon an abundent supply of the best water is assured, as dry weather does not effect our wells. All the veils in this county seem to have pbnet rated a stratum of flowing wa-ihr that is incxhati stable, for continuous running of the wind pumps does riot lower the supply, Foi" the production of all kinds of vegi tables suffice it to" say that there are as fine gardens in Sherman county this year a can be seen in any state in the anion.

As a stock raising country, ail agree that no better than tins exists any where. Taken altogether we certainly have in this county all of the elements of successful and rapid development, and the, time is riot far distant when vre shall have one of the nost prosperous agricultural counties in the west. A great deal of Lxlfte advertising matter concerning different parts of the west has been circulated by visionary land agents, j.ut the truth, as we give it here, is the best advertisement for so promising a locality as Sherman county. I he soil and climate are admirably adapted to the raising of all kinds of 'rain, vegetables and fruits that are fown any where in the same latitude, and industry and care in tilling lie soil assures a profitable harvest. Come to Sherman county, Kansas, and help us to make it the blooming garden which nature has designed it to dnthivifiri no If.

In November next there will be county officers to elect, and the main object should be to get honest men to fill these offices; men who we can trust to look after the -interests of the county, and who will not be ruled by a clique or ring and lend themselves to further the schemes of private individuals.

Persons who have read the Dark Horse have seen standing advertisements and many notices of a republican mass- meeting and also the appointment of a republican centra! committee, and they have also seen that the whole arrangement has been engineered, by the Eustis clique. The republican movement at Eustis does not represent the republicans of this county, and we know that a large majority of them will not have anything to do with it. It is clearly to be seen that the central committee is composed of Eustis men and Eustis, sympathisers, who hope to manipulate affairs of the party to the -benefit of that town. What steps that have been taken to organize the democratic party in the county have also been in the same manner, and it is the intention of the Eustis people to put two tickets in the field and whu-h ever party was victorious their officers would work for Eustis. We believe the News voices the sentiment of three-fourths of the voting population of this county when it states that the people do not want politics mixed in with the selection of our county officers this year, but what they do want is a Peoples Ticket with true and honest men for candidates.

It will make no difference in what part of the county they live in or what is. their political beliefs, as long as they are men that can- be trusted. The Eustis gang has had control of things now 820,000 worth, and in this political move they were shaping their ends to still keep in power the same bosses, with a change of officers. The present officers have made their hist ory in this county and it.is safe to. say not one of them Av.il 1 ever be trusted in power again.

In every instance they have pandered to the wishes of Eustis. In some of the offices gross neglect of duty has been the rule, and in others incompetency and ignorance. The time has come for a halt, and it has been called. The county is iii no shape for a political battle. We things to look after and the main one is to lift from our shoulders the heavy debt which has been placed upon us by these men who are trying to form the two pa-ties, and in order to do this we must put inen in power who will look after our and not be the slave of party power or be subservient to the wishes of certain parts of the county, but who will see that every portion of the.

county has an equal chance. There is plenty of time for political strife, and sb ignore the Eustis republican committee and let a convention be called and "steps taken to put a strong ticket in the field. All the republicanism of Sherman county does hot center in Bagley and Tait, neither does all the democracy radiate alone from Capt. Allen and Billy Walker. A call is made for a repablican county convention at Eustis signed by Bagley, chairman.

Let it alohe, and let Bagley and Tait put men on the ticket they can handle, and then let the. people. put their ticket in the field, and you will win, and the powers that now be will be snowed under by a larger majority than 206. Russeli-Swisher Wedding. Last was a joyful day.

at the homestead of Dr. W. B. Swisher, four miles south of Sherman Center, by the marriage of C. P.

Russell and Miss Orissa A. Swi slier. The groom, welL known in western Kansas as one ef our enterprising business men and the bride as a pleasant lady. Tlu-wedding was note worthy from the fact that almost all the immediate relations of the young couple had gathered from long distances to be present. Swisher's family were all there with the exception of a sister living in Nebraska.

The grand lodge of the II. U. A. met at Allen's hall last Saturday to receive propositions from all parties as to what would be given to the county seat. There never has been as large a crowd in Sherman county as was in attendance, as the question to be settled was of importance to every one in the county; Each subordinate lodge as entitled to three delegates and eighty-ohe were present.

After some preliminary business the real object of tho meeting was brought up and the following propositions were made by the four towns. The Goodland town company frodiiced their charter from the state sighed and sealed by the secretary of. the state, saying the members of the town company were responsible for 100,000. There proposition ivas: A court house built on a block of ground and deeded to the whk-li will cost not less than of which they had the plans and specifications; a good jail of two cells, one built of steel; 40 acres of land which is to be fenced in by a four-wire fence, a floral hall 20x40 built and a well dug and mill and pump complete, to be used as a fair ground; two blocks of land for school houses Or public building and eight locations, for other public improvements. Accohipaning this proposition was a bond for $20,000 for the performance of the sworn to and acknoledged.

Center was the next best offer 3 85,000 court house to be built on the public square, and 40 acres, of land adjoining the town site which was accompanied -by a- bond for $10,000, sworn to and acknowledged. Eustis. proposed to build a 83,000 court house aiid give .40 acres of ground, giving' a bond which was not sworn to, but merely filed with the county clerk. Voltaire put in the smallest proposition, it being 60 acres of land, a court house (ho price stated) and plenty of water. There was no bond with this.

'After the propositions were made a motion was made to reject all but the first one, that of the Goodland company, and then the argument began in earnest. 2Ir. Montgomery spoke, for-tho interests of Goodland and explained what, the' intended to do, and was warmly applauded time and again. James Stevenson did the same for Eustis but as his speech was the old string of falsehoods ste-reotyped in the Dark Horse for a year and a eulogy oh the Company, he was not listened to. with any degree of.

respect; was ihterupted by the erys of "rats" and "put him out." Bagley -also spoke for Eustis after he. had asked to be protected by the chair, which was ah insult to the men present, as they were gentlemen, and would not have interfered with him. Voltaire and Sherman Center saw- the situation and were quiet. The. motion was lost and another motion accepted, which accepted all the propositions and for them to be voted on by the subordinate lodges, but of the delegates present 60 were fof Good-land and .15 against it.

During the proceedings Stevenson said that he had a-paper some -one had. handed to he did not know whom. When he read it, it was an abstract of the land purchased by the Goodland people, signed by Register of Deeds Penny, and. bearing the cciinty Seal showing a flaw in the title! It was then ordered by the chair to call Mr. Penny and let him explain, but before this could be accomplished, Dr.

rabid Eustis man, got up and confessed that he had made the abstract signet! and attached the seal and Penny did not know of it: As there was no truth in it, it only showed the meanness Eustis stoops in order to injure all parties and advance her own cause," but it acted the other way, and where profit was eipected disgust was produced. What the subordinate lodges will do can only be judged -by the expression cf the grand lodge, last Saturday. There are two better propositions before the body than that of Eustis, and the uieii ho compose thesg lodges are hot going to put up wiUi any foolishness. They represent over two-thirds of the comity's population, have be selected by their lodges as the most worthy to represent them in the grand lodge, and you can depend bn it that they are men of honor and will da the best they "can to help the interests and prospects of Sherman county. The farmers can well afford to leave tills matter in their hands as they will do you square.
