Prof. Allen of the high school is the only real literary man in town with the nerve to announce himself in a new crash buil. Mrs. Mary Harvey, ot Goddard, died yesterday afternoon, aged 38. The funeral was held today and she was buried at the cemetery at Goddard.

Mayor Finley Ross, his wife and daughter left today for Colorado points for the summer. They will go to Colorado Springs first and from there to the many interior resorts of Interest among the mountain. The Sunday school of the St. ohn's Episcopal church will hold Its annual picnic in Linwood park Thursday afternoon, Conveyances will be at the church at 2:30 to take all the schol ars and their teachers to the picnlct grounds. Prof. Scott's Arithmetic class is pro gressing nicely and many new facts are being brought out. ijuite a number or visitors are no ticed each day nt the institute, some of whom are quite prominent in educa tlonai work. The interest manifested so far this week has been greater than that of the past three weeks, und students and teachers are taking an active part In the discussions. Prof AdamB will soon be needing more room to accomodate his second Physiology class.

It is the largest class in the institute now and much in terest is manifested in the work. Prof. Temple's penmanship class is on the increase, the large room being nearly full and much interest is being shown. The vertical system was into-duced this morning for those who' wish to teach it in the schools The institute now boasts of an insti- sule quartette composed of Messrs. Temple, Cunning, Fifer and Dill, un der the leadership of Miss Clark.

Their first appearance this morning was greeted with applause. They expect to render a selecfon every morning at chapel exercises. Prof. Edwin L. Barker was a visitor at the Institute this morning and was called upon to entertain the students and teachers which he did by giving a number of characteristic sketches illustrating various persons.

The assured immense wheat crop of Kansas and the Territory has attracted the attention of some of the influential grain brokers, mill agents and exporters of the east, and they are sending representatives to Wichita to take up quarters here during the shipment season of this year's crop.

They came from all the big cereal centers of the country, and they come prepared to bid to get the product of the year, and large quantities will be exported by way of the Gulf and also the seaboard points. Very recently six new companies have located here, five of whom are in the Sedgwick block, long recognized as the grain pit of the Other office blocks In the city are also receiving new grain firms and many agents are either here looking over the situation, or else in communication with parties here with the intention of removing here to ae cure part of our immense yiold. Sunday afternoon last a young man giving bis name as Will I'. Cloonan came to the R. H. Roys bicycle livery resort and asked to rent a wheel for an hour to go about a mile, and a half out of the city to see a whose name he gave as Thos. Wilson, a Santa Fe employe.

For reference he gave Mr. Wilson, and suid also that he was printer from Winfleld and had been working several days In the Eagle job office. Mr. Roys gave htm the wheel and In an hour he was bnci; and paid for Its use. Yesterday afternoon the same young man came to Mr.

Roys again, this tirr.o with another, who he said was a friend by the name of John Schmedt, also of Winfleld, and giving Mr, Wilson and the Eagle as reference, rented wheels for an hour and rode away. They may be riding yet, for unlike the cat, never came back. To-day Mr, Roys became convinced that it whs nor or dinary lark or even a spree, but a plain case of steal. Though there are sev eral Thomas Wilsons in the city, there appears to be no such man employed by the Santa Fc, and the latter know nothing of Cloonan. The Englo like wise never heard of Cloonan, and no such person has worked there lately" Mr.

Roys has informed the officers and has himself made inquiries and tinds no one who has seea them or knows their whereabouts. This after noon he sent out 150 postal cards bear ing discretions of the men and the bicycles. The wheels are valuable ones and r. Roys proposes to make it very warm for the robbers should thev be caught. FUN IS THE WATCHWORD.

H. Nelson, the queensware mer chant was driving down the Avenue this morning, and the corner of Tope- ka Avenue his horse slipped and fell in the shafts. Bystanders came to his assistance and the horse was got up on his feet all right without serious dam age to the rig. Lawrence Cossord, familiarly known in the city as "Billy Cased" died at fi o'clock this morning at St. Francis hospital after a two weeks' sickness of typhoid fever.

Her life at dhe time was despaired of, but her friends are glad to know she sustained the shock, and under the skilled treatment of Dr, Wendell is able to return to her home, on the road to complete recovery. There Is nothing so apt to dry up the milk of human kindness in your heart as to have a neighbor keep a nasty old pig pen under your nose this hot weath er. There one upon North Water street just above Central that is going to cause a neighborhood riot unless it is moved.

The board of health should condemn It as a nuisance. There should be a law against raising hogs in the heart of the city, if there isn't one al icady. The Lawrence Journal says: Poor Old Ben Clover was turned down by the Pops yesterday when he tried to gel a thirty dollar job. However, his wife landed one, and s'he can have Ben live with ber at the expense of the state, and still manage to keep the wolf away. By the way, the wife upon whom ha has to depend now is no other than the ''girl with the red slippers" who caused his downfall when he was a congressman It Is right and proper that she should support him.
