JUNE 17. 1887 THE HOWL FROM WICHITA. The Wichita Eagle continues to yell because the city government is Bhorn of all power to give aid and protection to the ylolatorsof the prohibitory law In that city. What are the facts? Attorney Gen eral Bradford was called to Wichita by manv of her best people in order that he might see for himself that "joints" and other Illegal shopB were running where liquors were dispensed dally In violation of the law. lie found the city government virtually in partnership with this traffic, for the council had not only repealed every ordinance prohibiting the illegal sale of liquor, but a member of that bodj was absolutely running a Joint, and that with the silent endorsement of the officials and the Eagle as well.

The Eagle had persistently denied that the prohibitory law was being violated there, and assured the attorney general that should he visit Wichita and find a single person selling liquors contrary to th statute, he would have the aid and assistance of that paper and the people in bringing the criminal to justice. And now that the executive council has proceeded to wipe out this illegal business by taking from the hands of the city government its police power, which has heretofore winked at the numerous "lunch stands" and joints" dealing out liquors in violation of law, and placing it in the hands of men who will see that the laws of the state are enforced, and Eagle swallows its re cent professions of morality and loyal ty, and comes out as the special chain pion of the joint keepers and arrays itself on the side of whiskey and in opposition to decency, law and good gov-ernment. The trouble with the Eagle and Wichita is, they have conceived the idea that they are a little bigger and better than the state of Kansas, and that no protest must be made even to the open and glaring violation of state law. But they have learned that this conclusion is far fetched, and that unless they obey the laws of the com monwealth they will be brought suddenly to a realization of their rebell ious position. It its opposition to the enforcement of law, and its enforcement of the "joint" and lunch counter administra tion," where liquors were sold in vto' lation of the statutes, the Eagle has shown very bad judgment.

Topeka Capital. The above is In the main a correct explanation of the whole situation, ex- cept that we object to Wichita being held responsible for the inconsistencies and bigotry of Marsh Murdock, who is alone of the opinion that Wich ita is bigger than Kansas, and that he owns Wichita, and therefore should be made governor of the state. ACROSS THE SEAS. The births recorded in London every week exceed the deaths by more than one thousand. One huudred and twenty passengers on a recent train from Liverpool to London were Americans.

Prince Napoleon's younger son, who now bears the title of Count Lulgi MonCalieri, has entered the Italian service as a sub-lieutenant in the 3rd regiment of cavalry, now stationed at Verona. Cardinal Tecci was nuncio there and doyden of the diplomatic corps, and he sat by the queen and had along conversation with her. Afterwards he had an audience of her in London. In England they have been arguing the question as to the relative mental powers of men and women. The view is extensively taken that girls are brighter and more apt than boys, but that in later years the male intellect shows much more force and capacity. Marsh MeCuiie ia t'itv.

The bird was then left in undisputed possession. A pair of swallows have built a nest in one of the electric lights in Oskosh, Wisconsiu, and have hatched out five or six little ones, which are lively and noisy. Tne nest, is immediately beneath the hood, which is placed over the lamp and only a few inches from the light. The lamp is lowered every day to be trimmed, but it does not disturb the little inmates. A correspondent of the London Times tells of a llobln that built its nest oh a shelf in his dressing room and has laid three eggs in it.
