An elm tree open the main drive in Prospect park, Brooklyn, near the bottle path, has been marked by a polished plats, which bears the word "Nellie." It. is a shapely tree, and stands in a favorable position to attract the attention of those driving through the park. The tree is the favorite in the park, of Mrs. Howard, of Columbia heights, whose husband was of the firm of Howard, Banger and she obtained the permission of the park commissioners to have the plate put upon its trunk in memory of her daughter Nellie, by whom it was also much admired. Mrs.

Howard and Miss Nellio took morning drives to the park, and always stopped their phaeton beneath the shade of this elm. fhey became attached to And think yon do not treat year helra rlffht If ysm mot VyoU yonrsMsifof those MONDAY, MARCH 10, 1883. Geo. Barker's reason for not con- tributing to the Bowersoek boom meet- ing, was that he war afraid Charley Thacher would give the dollar to John Donnelly and not the Bowersoek boom fund. Funerals cost two and one-half times more money annually than would buy the grounds and buildings of all the universities and colleges in America. The amount of money expended on funerals in the United States, if saved for a fraction over four years, would equal the total sum disbursed by our government for pensions during the last twenty years.

Funerals cost this country in 1880 enough money to pay the liabilities of all tbe commercial failures iu the United States during the same year, and give each bankrupt a capital of $8,640 with which to business. Funerals cost annually more money than the value of the combined gold snd silver yield of the United States in the year 1880. The population of the Christian world, in round numbers, is about 400.000;000 people, a little less than one-third the population of the entire earth. At the average cost of burying the dead in the United States, the Christian world would expend annually for funerals $800,000 000i at a safe estimate. Let this annual expenditure of money be saved, with its accrued interest at 6 per for a trifle over twenty years, and it would pay off ttie combined national debts of the world." These figures do not include the enormous sums invested We are compelled to take the law as it is for the next two years.

It is said that Mrs. Howard began to believe that the spirit of her daughter came to the tree to meet her, and that she now approaches the Spot in full expectation each time of being placed in communication with the spirit. Wishing to set apart the tree from the others, she caused it to be marked with the plate, and now it has become known by the park laborers, as the "Nellie tree." i Since the tree has thus been marked it has been struck three times by lightning, a fact that arouses wonder among Some of the superstitious laborers, but Mr.

J. Y. Culyer, tbe chief engineer of the park, says that the tree is exposed so that it attracts lightning. It was however, never struck before it was marked, Scattering untt Now, you will find that liberal peopl sre happy people, and get more enjoyment out of what they have than folks of a churlish mind. Said Edward Everett once, "The common people will always understand a speaker who understands himself and uses simple language." She wrote the letter "just for furi," but it happened to strike the fancy of tho Ilawkeye citizen, and it resulted in an exchange of photographs and a loving correspondence. Realizing at length that she was carrying the joke too far, the girl confessed her deception, and this confession led the way to an engagement and an appointment between the parties to meet at Minneapolis to be married. But whertslie came to see her idol face to face, what was her vexation to behold, instead of the manly, intelligent, and comely individual which the photograph had promised, a man wearing an old slouch hat, decidedly seedy in appearance, and altogether unattractive.
