Tho victim was Mr. James Cotton, the station agent, who also keeps a general store, where the murder was done. The time at which the crima was committed is supposed to have been between the hours of 10 and 11 p. as a light-was seen at the store at ten o'clock, and all was dark at eleven o'clock; but the discovery was not made until this morning, when Mr. Cotton's lifeless body was found with the head nearly severed from the body.

The deed was done with an axe belonging to Mr. Cotton, who was evidently engaged in putting up some goods, as a pair of overalls and three boxes of sardines were upon the counter ready to be wrapped up. The scoop of the scales was in the open cracker barrel, as if Mr. Cotton was in the act of scooping up some crackers, and while thus engaged the blow from the axe must have been given. The weapen struck the unfortunate victim upon the neck back of and below the right ear, nearly severing the head from the body.

Robbery was the object, as the money till was rifled, but $700, which was hidden away, the murderer or murderers failed to discover. No reliable clue has yet been found. Getting warm again.
