The new stone flagging in front of Dr. Neumanns is appreciated, other business men should follow his example in this respect. The Grangers had a supper at the Bowen School House, Washington Creek, last night. A number from town were present.

Miss Emma Jewett visited our sanctum, this morning, and paid for the Reporter two months in ad-ranee. They all Jewett. Prof. Roohrey, of Eudora, "smiled" on us, and with us this morning. A firat-ward man catoe into our office to-day and said "Mention Ely Moore's name us couucilmen in our Candidates, make your announcements, it will cost you no more to announce noiv, than it will a week before the election.

Come in and leave your names and the office you will serve the people in. The regular F.irday nihfc hop of Hubbell's came off last night in Miller's Hall, a very large crowd was present, and the light fantastic was tripped till nearly morning, these dances are becoming justly populor. This town wants a young man for Mayor. They don't want any old fogies. There are some old fogies in this city who it were better for the prosperity of Lawrenae if they were out of the city.

Lawrence wants a youug, live business man, one who ha9 an interest in the city and will look after her business. A. B. Warren is the man. Now Major, when that article was written, the auther had no idea that any one would suppose for a moment, that he was "working" for "military honors." He is not, it is all he can do to take care of himself, much less a coinpiny, But he does want a Milita Company in this town, and judging from the inter-est being manifested in the matter, Lawrence will soon have one that she will be proud of.

EDITORIAL BUSINESS NOTICES. Two cents a line each insertion. THE "DESPERADO" CANARD, 'Tis Not WjlUam Gibbs, But Hugh Gibbs A Relative. A Talk With Him in III Sell. A man was arrested yesterday by ofliber Estes as being William Gibbs, the would-be niurdererj of Shawnee County.

About dark Thurt lay night a man ou horseback rode to a hotel on New Hampshire Street and asked for lodging which was r-ivea him. He said his name was Gibbs, and that he was hunting land to buy. Next day he got in with a young man and made a confidant of him, telling him he had shot a man hear Soldier Creek. The young man gave him away to the police yesterday noon, and Estes went in pursuit of him. He found him on Mam Street, below Quincy, and the abovo mentioned y.

m. talking with him. As Estes approached, he heard Gibbs tell the y. m. that he thought he was going to "give him away." And threatened in very harsh and severe terms to murder him if he did.

Estes thought it about time to commence action, and seized Gibbs by the arm, telling him to "come aloug." He offered Estes a draft of $100 which he said would be honored by any bank in Topeka, if he would let him loose. Estes, although not a millionaire, refused to take his note, and instead took him to the 'boose. The authorities of Topeka have been telegraphed to, will be down this afternoon. The above are substantially the facts in the case so far as known. Our reporter had an interview with his man Gibbs in his cell this morning.

He i3 about forty-five years old, five feet ten inches high, weighs about one hundred and seventy-five pounds, and is well dressed. He told the reporter that he was on the verge of insanity, that his name was not William Gibbs, but Hugh Gibbs, that he was drunk when told he the young man his name was William Gibbs, that he had a brother named William Gibbs in Kansas and he supposes that is the man. He is pleading for whiskey nearly all the time, and it is thought he is partly insane now. Nothing he says, can be relied on, as he contradicts himself in his conversation every few words. It is the opinion of our reporter that he is not the right man.

The reporter of the Standard wishing to 'get ahead" of the Reporter, last evening published! an article, headed "A Strange Being." They called him a "wil man," and endeavored to make a sensation out of what was only a case of drunken-ess and vagrancy. The Reporter published the facts of the case Thursday, and gave all the news in seven lines, whils the Standard elaborated and enlarged on it to almost a column. The city circulation of the Evening Reporter is greater than the circulationof any one of the daily papers published in lawrence or douglas county. THE FEMALE FIDDLER. Madame Camilla Urso At The Opera House Last Night.

One of the largest, and refined audience that have graced the Opera House in some time, were present last night to hear the world renowned and so-called accomplished violinist. The' entertainment opened with a trio from the Opera "Maria de Eohn" by Miss Sargent, and two gentlemen. It was wsll rendered. Miss Jennie Sargent then sang very sweetly "Lo! here the gentle Lark." She is a very pretty blonde.not by any means handsome, but attractive in her appearance on the stage. She has a rich, rather full and powerful voice, and in both her solos and duett gave excelent satisfaction.

Madame Urso, then appeared before the foot lights with her fiddle, and in a not very graceful manner lifted it under her chin and began sawing away on the programme stated was "Devil's Sonata." The people of 'Lawrence were mostly disappointed in this entertainment. They expected to see and hear artistic playing of unsurpassed excellence. Her appearance on the stage is characterized by her seeming indifference to smile on the ordinance. She stands like a statue on the stage, and very seldom casts her eyes above her violin. Her manners are far from being pleasing or attractive on the stage.

She books like a Swede wo-woman abont 45 yoars of age, and were it not for her good clothes would hardly be presentable. About the only encore she re. ceived was on the rendition of "Way Down upon the Swanee River." Her other performances being in the 'Di lanti palpili;" order, The favorites were Miss Jennie Sargent, and Mr. J. F.

Rudolphsen; who kept the audience in an uproar of laughter when before the curtain. The Standard yesterday in endeavoring to beat the Rspoetrr must have guessed who were on the special train from K. C. They said, Nave, Karnps, Van Horn, Dr. Muuiford, Williams, DuBois, Stevens and a lot of others were on the train.

Its a lie they were not on the train. The editor of this paper was one of the party, and knows. It does not make much difference one way or the other, but doing our duty as a ttewspaper we intend to "show them up," every time they undertake to decieve the citizens. The papers have practiced this thing of "making up" news out of nothing long enough, and now when they do it(in order to get something the Reporter has'nt got) we will brand them as liars aud show them up every time.
