In generalship he was second to none, in magnanimity he out-generaled them all. When General Lee surrendered to him he Baid, "take your horses home with you. You will need hem to make a li vi ng. It is the aim of the candidate for office to put his opponent on the defensive. (Jnee you compel him to defend' his own personality a-d the things he represents you have him in a position to whip him.

Now this is not a philosophic discussion we are indulging in, but the cold, hard fact, easily demonstrated by the history of past campaigns and admitted by every thinking politician. Hie two factions of the Republican party are indulging in this game of strategy, and the contest is getting quite warm. We believe we can draw some conclusions from the "war of words" thus far waged that are entirely unbiased, because the whole trouble is like a. bear fight to us--we don't care who licks. Wjien Tom Wagstaff first lurched his candidacy for Governor on, an unsuspecting public, it was in the nature of a surprise; then upon fur-t consideration thought it a sort of political joke (for Tom haa a as a joker.) But after the meeting at Topeka his boom began to loom up on the horizon like the real thing.

And now the governor of this great state practically dignifies it to a contest of gigantic proportions. And in the lengthy "missile" he has caused to be published in the press he has made what we would call a gic blunder in this, game of politics. For mind you, he has not waited for hir, opponents to place him and his administration on tha defensive, but he has himself by his own act placed his administration on the rack. It will not do for hi'm to play the "Garden of Eden" game in this and say the Legislature did it. Every one knows he has the power to veto, and Mr.

Stubbs himself held Hoch responsible for the acts of 'that administration. Furthermore, Mr. Stubbs has spent over $9000.00 of his contingent fund, which is than the three administrations of Stanley, Bailey and Hoch spent in contingent money during the same length of time. Taking, a bird's eye view of this little affair, we can come to no other conclusion but that Mr. Stubbs has lost several joints in making public his etter addressed to his distinguished opponents.

Si-ence is golden in more cases than usually thought of and would have been particularly golden in the case of Mr. Stubbs, for he held "High, low jack and the game in his own hands." More political battles have been lost by talking too much than by talking toi? little. If the Wagstaff cljowd know their business they will press the advantage thrown to them by the Governor with all the vim they possess.
