Brock, with a dozen other pilots, was plying for fares by Yarmouth; and, as the main-sheet was belayed, a sudden puff of wind upset the boat, when pre ently all perished except Brock himself, who, from 4 in the afternoon of an October evening to 1 the next morning, swam thirteen miles before he was able to hail a vessel at anchor in the offing. Animals themselves are capable of swimming immense distances, although unable to rest by the way. A dog re, cently swam thirty miles in America in order to rejoin his master. A mule and dog washed overboard during a gale in the Bay of Biscay have been known to make their way to shore. A dog swam ashore with a letter in his mouth at the Cape of Good Hope.

The crew of the ship to which the dog belonged all perished, which they need not have done had they only ventured to tread water as the dog did. As a certain ship was laboring heavily in the trough of the sea, it was found needful, in order to lighten the vessel, to throw some troop-horses overboard, which had been taken in at Corunna. The poor things, my informant, a staff-surgeon, told me, when they found them selves abandoned, faced round and swam for miles after, the vessel. Enquire of Rev. F.

A Dresden feuilletonist tells a truly remarkable story of how a young and sharp-witted wine merchant in the Rhine district made his way to good custom and ultimately to wealth. In the city where he lived many other older dealers, who had been long established and favorably knowi were his rivals. Against them he could make no headway. It was of no use that he advertised the cheapness and excellence of Lis wares, orders he solicited in vain. He was unknown, people had no faith in his v.

ines, aud he remained without patrons. At last one day, almost in despair, he took up a daily paper to try by reading to kill the time which hung so heavily upon his While engaged in this not very profitable employment, unprofitable it the puper he read was of the average German type, he noticed among the announcements of deaths that a tain convivial old baron who was noted for his fondness for IMiine wine had died very suddenly. It was then that his bright idea the idea which made his fortune came to the young man. Ujwn a respectable but solid looking piece of busiuess paper, bearing his letter-head well printed1, ho hastily but carefully penned to the dead man a note in which be thanked him for his kind order a few days before, never given, of course, said that the wine desired had been duly forwarded that day, and the price, according to the agreement between them would he 300 dialers. This letter, with a quantity of his best wine, he sent to the address of the dead baron.

The message and wine were received by the heirs and representatives of the latter, who, overjoyed at falling into a good property, paid the merchant's bill promptly, drank the wine, and doubtless, out of respect to the judgment of the baron, gave the dealer Whom he seemed to have favored an extensive order. So, little by little the good qualities of the wine which the young man had for sale became known, his custom increased steadily, and at the last his fortune was made. This story, which is now going the rounds of the German press, is vouched for as being founded on fact. F.BEYLE. Oswego Jan.

Baron A. was traveling with a friend through the south of France and into Italy. He was the possessor of a brand-new aud splendid chronometer, of which he was very proud. A constant source of complaint on the journey was that no watch-pockets were affixed to foreign beds, and that the chronometer, placed under the pillow at night, slipped, after the custom of chronometers from that position, and on doing so incurred risk of breakage. At length, at a small hotel near Lugano, at which a night's rest was to be taken, the baron found, to his delight, the pocket the absence of which had marred the pleasure of his journey.

So overjoyed was he that there was some talk of arranging the next day's journey with a view to returning to sleep once more at an inn so far in advance of its rivals in its attention to the comfort of guests. In the morning, however, the baron came down, with a rueful visage and showed the chronometer now silent and ruined. What had been taken for a watch-pocket at the head of the bed was a small vessel full of holy water. In that the watch had slept all night without experiencing the benefit which a more responsible being might have received from such an immersion. A vast amount of improvement Mrs Dr.
