E.Gilmore. In early when the world seem so full of beautiful things to be garn nered for happiness, it is easy to. be bright and hopef uL -'I know. I know Ihey. must die' away.

'The alter lights ofiro urlsty iLtwu'' And it is while watching this dying away, that the for 'courage comes in order to obtain that eercenity of spirit that enables one tc live the truest, and therefore, as a whole the happiest life. Temperaments Some rebound easily from discouragements. They are always hopeful, even when the ground for' it seems inLntesimally small, while others look through eyes of gloom at all of their surroundings And yet, I think this wide difference is of terner the result of individual living, than we are apt to think, it is a hard thing to watch the dying out of some thirling hop'e; the of a cherished plau, and yet shut the wound and disappointment away from tho world anil go on cheerful, but it can be dona, and eajh ono is the better and stronger for the doing while life as a whole is far happier. For it is true that the 'serene spirit radiates an athmosphera that affects all who comes within its limits Faith and hope and couraga ar wounderf ally infectious, and appearing to possess thass qualities even if you have them not, you aro helping their cultivation in others. GUARDED BY HALLS TIME Blight as the Jlaming sun's meridian beam.

COURAGE AND SERENITY. From the Cheyenne Traasparter. ACTIVE XATIVE3. A ride over the prairies a few days 'since assures ono that spring has, indeed, come. The singing of birds, the -green grass, the leaves ori the trees, and cspesially 4he fields teeming with Jifa make the heart rejoice with nature.

JHere and there may be seen Indians plowing, and although they do not yet handle Vthe plow easily and gracefully, yet they are persevering, and show a deter ruination to learn what their white brothers can. Bob-Tail Ball was out his yard, burning the rubbish, and a prettier green lawn than his would be hard to find this early in- the ppring. At Ben Keith's every thing seemed alive. In one field were five plows at work, and the length of the urro ws in a de the tteps count that would bo taken in the plowing of such a large sized field. Mr.

Keith was himself using a hand cultivator in his garden, while his gardener was using the rake in making beautiful beds that wLl soon be green with early vegetables. The small fruit trees and strawberries on this place look very thrifty. Oa one side of the yard were arranged a number of little coops for young chickens. Everything about this place shows thrift and industry, and if we were to judge we should say it is a model farm. A mile beyond we stopped at the farm house of Peter Shields: He was busy in the field, while his wife was caring for her household.

Mrs. Shields is noted for. neatness in her house and work, and for setting before the hungry who stop at her door a plenty of feub3tantials. To see these farms causes one to forget that we are in the Indian country; but industry and perseverance cause these results, and we only hope that the day may not far distant when all these acres show such thrift done by the Indians themselves, they having profitable fields and 'good homes, and realizing that by the labor of their hands they can earn their livelihood.
