Charles Harvey was switching in the yards last week while "Billy" Watkins was visiting his sister Mrs II Tompkins at Elinwooct. Brakeman, Frank Robinson ol Arkansas City was visiting old friends in this city a few days last week. Mrs Anna Largent, Geo Carry and Tom Nichols of Green were transacting business in our city Friday, See the great IToyt theatre success "A Baehlor's Honeymoon" at the Auditorium, Friday March ti. The Masquerade at the Rink Tuesday night was a great success. A large crowd was out and every body enjoyed themselves.

Scott Ramsey made a business trip to Emporia Saturday, Gerardy is on the sick list this week. Matt Bledsoe has rented the farm that is known as the old Harris farm one mile east of Strong, and will move as soon as vacated by Anay MeCabe, who we understand has bought a piece of laud near Mrs Hotskiss east of town. Farrington made a business trip to Kansas City Saturday. Elizabeth Clay came up from Em-ooria Friday for a few days visit with relatives and friends. She returned Tuesday.

Petty spentseveral days visiting with his nephew, Post Master Petty. Anna and Cora Betty after spending several months with home folks at Americus returned to our city Tuesday. The Kansas Gas and Cement Company got their main in through the alley between North Cottonwood Avenue and Chestnut street, to (ith street thence east by the Catholic Church to the alley between Cottonwood Avenue and North Elm street which they will follow to the rail road. II Cooper has purchased the Slabougb Ranch in Cedar township The ranch contained about eight hundred acres andlhe consideration was $20,500 00. A portion of this land formerly belonged to George Blackburn and mr Slaboug bought it adout two years ago. This arrangement of birthday would please most girls after they reach the age of sixteen.

County Contests The first of the township contests in essay and declamation was held at Wonsovu schoolhouso on Friday afternoon, February 28. A great deal of interest was taken in tho contest; a number of schools in the township dismissed for the aftar-noon in order that teacher and pupils might attend. There were twelve contestants, the following schools being represented: Wonsevu, Homestead, New Hope, Jackson. Every member was well prepared but tho judges gave first place In declamation to Blanche Martin of Homestead, second place to Edith Mason of Wonsevu; lirst place in essay to Hazel Ashenfelter of Jackson, second to Etta LaPlant of Homestead. Pupilsawarded first place in these township contests will represent their townships in the County Contest to be held later.

Diamond Creek township held their contest Monday afternoon, March 2nd at Elmdale. There were eight in this contest which was a very interesting one. Several schools attended; the following schools had pupils in the contest, Prairie Grove, Elk, Union, Walnut Grove, Blackshere. The children were all well prepared and tho decision was a question of some-difficulty, but was finally decided as follows: First in declamation Grace Dixon of Union, second Kipling Wells of Union first in essay Edna Rider of Walnut Grove, second Gladys Rumford of Blackshere, The contest for Toledo tawnship was held at Safford ville, Tuesday afternoon March 3rd. A large crowd was in attendance, Twelve pupils took part and it was an unusually close contet-t.

Tho following schools were represented, Sall'orJville, Toledo, Canaan, Grand view, Pleasant Hill, Bloody Creek. The decision gave first place in declamation to Schuyler Garth of SalTordxille, see ud to Edna Obley of Toledo; first in essay to Viva Jones of Salford ville and second to Irene Irwin of Grandview. The contest for Strong Towiiship Is to bo March 5 aud March (J. Some of the Freshmen in tne elocution class have discovered that reading is one of the arts. Will Patterson has been absent several days on account of sickness Messrs HefTelfinger and Stanfield took a little exprcise by way of a round trip walk to Elmdale Friday uight. The High School expects to give an entertainment in tho High School auditorium next week.

Mr Martin spent the latter part of last week visiting the Topeka aud Iawrence high schools. The boys have been practicing baseball this week. If the boys will we have the material for a winning team. Mr Dadibman, State Student Sec. of the Kansas Students MCA organization was with us and held meetings atthe school house Monday and Tuesday evening Mr Wooster a student of the Normal at Emporia came down with him and sangsever al solos white were enjoyed very much, at the meeting Monday.
