Mrs. Caroline Barnes, nee Ester-brook, who died at her home in Oketo, January 22, 1903, was born in lverby, Calodonia county, Vt, Jauuary 0, 1828. He parents died when she was but a little girl, and a tew years later with her adopted parents she moved to Wisconsin. At Weatherland, in 1843, she was married to Alpheus Barnes. They came to Kansas in 1859 and took up a homestead, adjoining Oketo on the northeast.

They were the second white family to settle in this neighborhood. Her hus band, who died about twenty-nine years ago, was one of the pioneer preachers of Kansas. She was the mother of nine children, of which one daughter and four sous survive, namely, Mrs. Louise Grisswold, Al-pho, Roscoe, George and Marion. The deceased had been sick for the past twenty years and during the last two she was confined to the bed.

The cause of her death was consumption. In early life she accepted God and at the age of fourteen she united with the M. E. church, to which she remained a faithful aud consistent member. Coining here at an early day she endured without a munuer the hardships of a pioneer's life.

She watched this country de- velope from a raw parairie, inhabit ed by Indians and buffalos, to its present state of prosperity. During the early dys she performed many acts of charity; always ready to lend a helping hand to those in sickness or distress, and many a life today owes its existanee to her careful nursing. Grandma Barnes, as she was gen erally called, was too well and lav orably known to this community to call forth any further comment from us, and her life was synoni mous to that passage found in the Apostle Paul's letter to Timothy, which read "1 have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, heuceforth there is laid up for me a crowu of life." Funeral services were held at the M. E. church last Saturday after, noon.
