The chestnut Is the wheat of Corsica, and Its flour Is used in the form of bread or polenta by the peasants throughout the island.

The chestnuts are Blowly dried over a Bmall wood fire and stored until required for grinding. The mills are of the simplest construetlon, and consist of a wooden water wheel whose axis turns a millstone which crushes the shelled chestnuts against a fixed stone. The cheaper grades of flour are of a dirty color owing to the presence of particles of the Bhells and contain between 11 and 12 per cent of moisture. The composition of different varieties of the flour has been determined recently by M. Cmnte.

who finds that chestnut flour closely approximates wheat flour In its food Value. It contains about the same amount of stnrch, more fat and cellulose, but less nitrogenous substances (7 to 9 per cent, as against 12 to 10 per cent in wheat flour). Chestnut flour attracts moisture very rapidly, and therefore soon becomes mou'dy unless kept In air-tight vessels. It has also the drawback of not being easily influenced by the action of yeast, and thus produces an Inferior kind of bread. Observation made 11.

The song of the cricket is associated with some of the most Joyful events In life, with full granaries and heaping cellars, with bending orchards, where squirrels scamper and cough along the walls, with hazy bills and misty vales, wltb mellow sunlight and silver moonlight, with kissing parties in the old farmhouses, and with seeing the rosy-cheeked girl home along the country road, and with standing by her side at the front gate, until the old stars went down In the west and new stars peeped above the eastern hills.

How the crickets did sing on those nights! And they said "Cheer up" as plainly as could he! Why any fellow should wish to cheer up, or how he could possibly need to cheer up. when standing closo up alongside of a nice girl to keep the bears sway, Is a question that we refuse to answer; and 11 does not matter In the least, for if the crickets had cried for us to feel bail we should have disobeyed them and would do so now, it we had the chance. Bangor News. BRAVERY OF THE DACHSHUND. Little Animal Seems to Have No Conception of Fear.

The pluck with which this little dog Is eniloweil Is simply wonderful. Dr. Gordon Stables, the well-known authority, Rives a striking Instance. A dachshund of his acquaintance had his upper Hp completely severed by a fox, but killed his foe notwithstanding. A lartre badger, which had defeated and expelled no less than six fox terriers, succumbed In a very Bhort time to a dachshund; while still another dog found a fox hola not big enough for his admission, and so laid sloge to it, and waited there for days, being regularly fed by his master, until Reynard compelled by the pangs of hunger, made a bolt, only to meet his doom.

The dachshund's power of scent Is remarkable and It Is well nigh Impossible to lose one, for these dogs have been known to find their way home for miles In the dark, although they may never have been In the road more than once before. They are highly to be recommended, therefore, as steadfast and brave companions. Too Easily Discouraged, He who says "I will!" over and over to himself and tries and who keeps on Baying and trying Is bound to win, whether he be only 18 years of age or 80. The trouble with the average man or woman Is to be fuund In the too-ready disposition to givo up. The king (the will) Is dethroned long before 80, sometimes before 60 and even before 40.

The individual thinks he has lost his chance and the Scripture says "As a man thlnketh la his heart so ho Is." Ho thinks he Is not good for much and so thinking ho Is not ood for much; he has lost his grip. Albany Times-Union. Astronomers Forced to Quackery. The following incident occurred during the administration of (lev. Ruble of Maine. It has been the custom of the Governor mid council to visit the Indians once In two years.

On one occasion, during a visit to the I'assumaquoddy tribe, situated twenty-five miles above Calais on the St. Croix waters, after everything bad been arranged satisfactorily to the tribe the Oovenor sent for the chief spokesman of the Indians, known as "Lying Joe," and abked where he could find a trusty Indian to look after a certain matter. Before the Age of Buttons, Persons who read much of historic romance cannot fall to recognlzo the request, "Truss my points," which has been by every writer of Kngllsh from the time of Chaucer. Perhaps everyone who read the phrase did not know that It meant, In common parlance, "lace up my clothes," but that Is what It did mean, ar-d the reason it ceased to be used In actual conversation resulted from the Invention of the button and the passing away of the custom of fastening the clothea by lacing. culled together very soou to issue a call for a county convention.
