If all our customers would make an effort and pay up old bills, we could continue our coal business on a credit basis. You may think I only owe a few dollars, from three to twenty. This don't look big its true, but when two hundred customers owe above amounts you can readily see it is a big sum on our books. This rule will only apply to coal, as all other items will be sold as in this past. The Misses Grace and Georgia Hutchinson of Marysville, were the guest of Miss Hazel Hamilton last Friday, and attended the High school play at the Opera house Friday night. Shineman of Frankfort was in our city Tuesday on business, and while here called at the Journal office. Mr. Shineman is interested in Mexico land and is offering some fine inducements to land buyers. Miss Gladys Drake entertained Miss Tressie Tracy of Marysville, who was here with a party of High school girls from that city to see "Merchant of Venice Up-to-Date," given by our High school students. E. Sunday school, gave a farewell party to J. H. Payne and Miss Ethel Keplinger, last Thursday night at the home of Rev. J.

C. Wilson. A splendid time was enjoyed by all. The M. E.

church held their annual business meeting Wednesday night, for the purpose of electing trustees and attending to some financial interests. The trustees elected are as follows: Frank arvin, M. P. Robinson, Henry Danheim, John Frost and H. F.

She did not keep count of the eggs from the beginning but since the first of the year they have laid 110 eggs. Has any one a better report? C. N. Burkett and wife served an oyster supper to the boys of the fire department last Saturday night, as a mark of appreciation for service rendered by them, at the time of their fire, two months ago. They also invited the band boys, as Mr.

Burkett is very fond of music, and he thinks the Blue Rapids band the best in the state. The boys appreciate very much their entertainment and are loud in their praises of the hospitali-of Mr. and Mrs. Burkett. Notice.

Shineman for lecture or pictures. Metropolitan Stock Company This Week at the Optra House. The Metropolitan Stock Company is producing a good line of plays at the opera house this week. The specialties are also well received. To-night the company will be seen in the three act comedy, "My Daughters Friday night the feature play "Dora" will be given.

Saturday afternoon a Big Bargain Matinee at 2:30 at which occasion the prices will be, children 10c, adults 20c, each child given a present. Saturday night concludes the engagement, when the old hit always good, "Ten Nights in a Bar Room" will be given. Save the Papers. The Baptist ladies are endeavor ing to secure a carload of papers, and will appreciate any thing you may have in news, manilla papers, old books, magiznes and catalogues. Please notify Mrs.

Godding and the paper will be removed at the earliest possible date. The ladies will also take orders for aprons aud sun bonnetts. The Fire. Monday afternoon the fire alarm was sounded and the department was called to the home of Willis Daily across the river. Fire was discovered in an upstairs room and is supposed to have originated from a defective flue.

Considerable damage was done to the room in which fire was discovered and to the furniture. W. F. DuUon drayman, took the boys and hose cart to the fire. Depot Kurned.

The Missouri Pacific depot at Bigelow, burned Monday night. The fire was discovered by the night central operator about midnight and the alarm was given by him, but before assistance arrived the fire had made such progress that there was no chance to save the building. It was a total loss, building and contents. Notice to Dancers. A club dance will be given at the opera house basement Wednesday, evening, March 8th, to which a cordial invitation is extended to all Blue Rapids dan cers.

L. Johnson of Salina was visiting with relatives here this week. The Misses Mryle and Grace Dexter spent Tuesday evening at Mr. Brooks. Jim the telephone man was in this vicinity Wednesday repairing phones.

Quite a crowd of men attended Joe Ihverlkotte's sale at Marysville Wednesday. Mrs. Wattors and Dessa and the Misses Dexter spent Thursday at Mrs. 1 Hairs Earl Talbot was dehorning a 1 1 1 for Geo. Guise and G.

lloneycutton Wednesday. The old time custom of going horse-back riding on Sunday evening is getting fashionable now. Miss Nellie Vanamburg spent the latter part ot week in Beattie visiting her sister, Mrs. James Gordon. Some of the young folks a- round here attended the entertainment at the Scriber school house Thursday evening.

Oscar Duckworth and wife of Beattie were visiting with Mrs. Duckworth's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D.

Vanamburgover Sunday. Some of the neigbors of Mr. and Mrs. Rupp met tit their home Saturday evening for a farewell party, a good time was had by all present. All the young folks went in and spent the Friday evening with Geo.

Berrier Berrier. Phone No. 21. The Goverment has secured the return of 2,000 acres of valuable land in Nevada which is said to have been illegally secured by the old Central Pacific Railroad. Mrs Harriman, widow of the late E.

II. Harriman, aided in securing the return of the land. There is valauble mineral land said to be worth $50,000,000 still held by the railroads that ihe Goverment is seeking to get back. It gave the Pacific roads immense tracts of land, but they seem to have taken a good deal which was not given. It is also said that they did not conform to the grants.

Instead of taking each alternate section as given, they selected land, espoci-aly mineral land, and entered it as agricultural, and left the worthless tracts. The thanks of the country are due Mrs. Harriman for her efforts to right the wrong, as well as for her large gifts of land near the Hudson river for a public park. Elm Creek. Mrs.

J. O. Hunt is quite sick this week. Mrs. Ed.

Rice visited at Boy- akins Thursday. The Ladies Aid met with Mrs. Chas. Mayer Thursday. Mrs.

Francis Benson has been quite sick the past week. Ralph Hunt was up from Manhattan this week attending court. Miss Lucy Boyakin spent Monday afternoon at Mrs. Mayers. J.

Q. Hunt and F. E. Mayer was attending court this week. A.
