Beattie State Bank Beattie, Kansas. Mrs. J. R. Wilcox.

Mrs. J. R. Wilcox died at the family home in Beattie last Friday evening September 29, at 10:20 o'clock. Mrs.

Wilcox had been in poor health for several months and had been under the doctor's care for about three months. Despite the best attention by the physicians and those assisting with her care she continued to grow worse until her suffering was relieved in death. Sarah L. Ballard was born near Des Moines, Iowa, October 9, 1847, and was married to J. R.

Wilcox on August 25, 1865, the ceremony being performed by Simon Dorn near what was then Fort Des Moines. Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox continued to live in that county for a few weeks after their marriage after which they moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where they lived for about six years, coming to Marshall county in the spring of 1871, settling on a homestead about six miles northwest of Beattie which was their home for about twenty years.

Later they bought a section of land about a mile and a half from Beattie and lived there for a couple of years, moving to Beattie in 1892, which has since been their home. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, three of whom, Mrs. Tinnie Lockner, Mrs.

Mary Kezlam and Harry Wilcox, survive. Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in August, 1915. Mrs.

Wilcox became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church when about sixteen years of age and thereafter lived the life of a conscientious christian woman. She affiliated with the Baptist church when the family came to Kansas and later, because that church at that time did not have regular services, transferred her membership to the Christian church. Mrs. Wilcox was a member of the Good Templars and with her husband organized the first lodge of that order in this community, and retained her membership until her death. She was also a member of the Knights Ladies of Security.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother and a good neighbor, held in the highest regard by her many friends. The bereaved husband and other relatives have the sympathy of all in their sorrow. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev.

F. E. Against Progressive Legislation Mr. Harger's Record Shows Consistent Opposition to Anything and Everything Progressive. In order to know what a candidate, for public office really stands for it Is necessary to look at what he has been standing for rather than to the promises he may make when he is a candidate.

Let us apply that test to Mr. Harger, The Interstate Commerce Commission has time and again demonstrated 11.5 value to the people of the country. But when that commission was getting fairly organized the reactionaries In Congress endeavored to cripple it by withholding appropriations. An appropriation of $350,000 WAS cut down to $50,000 and when the country began to protest Mr. Harger went to the defense of the reactionaries.

Here is what he said in his paper on May 14, 1908: "A lot of rumpus is being kicked up because some congressmen did not vote to give the Interstate Commerce Commission $850,000 instead of 000. There are seven members of the commission, mostly respectable old August, Fritz for many years a resident of this community, but who has for the past few years made his home near Hiawatha, died at the latter place Tuesday morning of this week at 5 o'clock. The deceased was in his 87th year at the time of his death. Funeral services will be held at the M. E.

church in Beattie Saturday afternoon, October 7, at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Beattie Union cemetery. We were unable to secure data for a more complete notice of Mr. Fritz's death but will endeavor to do so for a later issue. August Fritz Dead.

Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lord celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last Sunday at their home in Beattie with a big dinner and other appropriate ceremonies, at which about twenty, relatives and friends were present.

Mr. and Mrs. Lord were married in Harrison county, Indiana, on September 30, 1866, and continued to make their home there until in the spring of 1874, when they moved to Dennison, Texas. They remained in Texas but a few weeks when they came to Marshall county, settling in Center township. They made their home on the farm in Center township until eleven years ago when Mr.

Lord was appointed carrier on Route No. 2. Mr. Lord served ten years as mail carrier. He resigned a year ago last March and was relieved by the present carrier, E.

M. Cannon, on the first of November, 1915. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lord, nine of whom are living.

One child died in infancy, one son, Benjamin died at the age of sixteen and another son, Lewis, died at the age of thirty. The nine living children are Margaret (Mrs. S. J. Paintin) of Graham county, Rose (Mrs.

J. S. Paintin) Graham county, Olive (Mrs. F. W.

Taylor) Lillis, and Stella and Bessie who are at home, and Samuel Winifred; John, Beattie; Frank, at home, and Andrew, Beattie. Mr. and Mrs. Lord have seventeen grandchildren. Mr.

Lord will be seventyfive years of age his next birthday, the 24th of next January and Mrs. Lord will celebrate her sixty-seventh birthday ori the 18th of December, and both are enjoying fairly good health for people of their years. Mr. and Mrs. Lord recieved many presents from relatives and friends on this occasion, among them a $10 gold piece from their daughters who live in Graham county.

It is not often that a couple live to celebrate fifty years of married life and the many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Lord congratulate them on attaining this unusual distinction and hope they may live to enjoy many more anniversaries of their marriage. BROWN, Secretary. 00004000004 gentlemen who go to sleep if the hearings are too long and usually take the matter 'under Honest, now, did you ever hear of the Interstate Commerce Commission doing anything that amounted to shucks? For all that it accomplished $50,000 is plenty." The "respectable old gentlemen who go to sleep if the hearings are too long" managed to do a world of good for this country. of ours and today the representative in Congress who would try to cripple the commission would be driven into private life by an indignant constituency. But Mr. Harger so favored and if any change has come to him he has not given expression to it.
