THE ROSSVILLE NEWS. SUCCEEDING THE ROSSVILLE TIMES. ESTABLISHED IN 1. Rossville, Kansas, Friday, September 28, 1900. No.

44. Horace M. Binns. Sad and startling was the word passed around the city last Friday evening aunouncing the death of Horace M. Binns, which resulted that afternoon from an overdose of morphine, taken the previous evening.

In the prime of physical manhood, possessing a bright intelleet and unusual qualifications for commanding success in life, surrounded by hosts of friends and loving relations besides his own charming family circle, cruel and ironical indeed was the fate that suddenly deprived him of his mind and led to such shocking results. The funeral was held from the M. E. church last Sunday morning and was very largely attended. Rev.

J. M. Jackson of Topeka delivered a most impressive funeral sermon, at the conclusion of which a solemn procession wended its way to the home of the dead on the pretty hill north of the city. The afflicted widow and children, the aged parents and other relatives, bearing the crushing blow with great fortitude, have the sincere sympathy of hundreds of friends and acquaintances. Lodge Officers.

The following officers were elected at the last meeting of the Knights and Ladies of Security: Pres. -D. M. Howard. V.

Pres. -H. F. Pratt. 2nd V.

Pres. -Mrs. Jennie Keigly. Treas. -Mrs.

Maggie Enos. Cor. Sec'y. -Mrs. Laura Miller.

Financial See L. Stratton. Con. -Mrs. Lurana R.

H. Conley. Prel. -Mrs. Chettie A.

Howard. D. Hartzell. Weseloh. Summer are over and the problems of the winter are at hand.

Your plans should not be arranged without remembering that S. H. Miles Co. are prepared to please and profit you either summer or winter. We are here the year round with the best of service and seasonable lines of Dry Goods, Notions, Shoes, Etc.

If you are tired of skating around from place to place with the expectation of finding. unheard of bargains at ridiculous prices, just drop in here and get a really honest value at a price that will guarantee its worth. A Set of Dominoes Free with Every Pair of Shoes. Miles Co. I am the boss! In the hollow of my hand I hold the key to the machinery that runs the State.

Some fools still swallow the story that this great country is partly theirs, and they have the privilege of helping to shape affairs. That makes me laugh. The majority rules, and I constitute one more than half. Those that lick my boots with proper regularity are sometimes let in with me o1L the good things that I make free to parcel out as I please. The rest might as well live over seas in Russia.

There they would have just as great a share in directing how things must be run as they have now. Two-fifths of the people here are fools; one-fifth are rogues; these three-fifths are always for me; they're my tools. See? T'ell with the other two-fifths who have sense enough to see! They can't help themselves, and when election day comes along they'll step up and vote for my straw men anyway. In the meantime I stand around the corner, and -excuse me while I smile. -Chicago Times- Herald.

The Boss. Resolutions of Condolence. In memory of brother L. E. Moseley, Hall of Rossville Lodge No.

75, A. O. U. Rossville, Kansas, September 15, 1900. Whereas.

the Supreme Ruler of the Universe has seen fit to remove from us our late brother, L. E. Moseley, and, Whereas, this Lodge desires to express its sincere condolence to the bereft family. Therefore, be it resolved, that the wife and family of our late brother have our heartfelt sympathy in this their hour of affliction. Resolved that we mourn the loss of a dear brother, faithful friend and co-worker in our order, and will hold his name in fond remem- brance.

Resolved, that these resolutions become a part of the record of our Lodge and a copy be furnished the family of our late brother, and be published in our city paper and the Kansas Workman, and that our charter and lodge room be draped in mourning for thirty days. W. H. Wasson, J. M.

Amis, J. W. Jamieson, Committee. Schools are everywhere reopening. after the long holidays, and the hint in the following is therefore very timely: "The parents can help to improve the school by an occasional visit thereto, speaking words of encouragement to the teacher and shewing an interest in the children's studies.

But if we would have our schools all they should be we will not only have to employ good teachers, but we will have to begin at the beginning and train our children to habits of obedience and Speaking of this latter point does it ever occur to parents what a tremendous task it is for a teacher to secure obedience from a class, half of whom are r.ever required to obey anyone? Look out for our boys. Family government is the best. It does more for the state than jails and penitentiaries. The mother does more for the morals of the community than the preacher possibly can, and the father is in a position to do more for the country than a major general. Your boys, to become intelligent and useful citizens, must be kept at work and don't forget that idleness is the devil's workshop.

The boy that idles his time away in loafing about when he ought to be at work, is taking steps to become a tramp or a thief." Kansas Valley Drug Store ESTABLISHED 1872.
