The populists of Riley have reason to be proud of the work done in convention at Kiley Wednesday. The ticket placed in nomination Is all that could be asked and the convention was harmonious throughout.

Although some of the places were warmly contested, there seems to be no sore places, and all the boys are ready to take off their coats and work for the election of the ticket from top to bottom. Chairman, ,1. N. Limbocker, of the County Central committee, called tbe convention to order at 11 o'clock, delivering a neat and telling speech, which was liberally applauded. The list of delegates compiled by tbe secretary was declared to be the delegates entitled to seats in tbe convention.

Permanent organization was then affected by electing S. N. Chaffee, chairman, and I. O. Stewart, secretary.

The reorganization of tha county central committee resulted in there-election of J.

A Close Ciiiinc. There as a ball game at tbe park Friday, between the Shamrocks and Monarchs. Tbe game resulted in a victory for the former by a score of 11 to As this is the tirst time the Monarchs have felt the sting of defeat it comes to them with unusual severity, anil to hear their tale of woe one would imagine their very hearts were broken. Tbe cause of the defeat, as given by the Monarchs, is that the sons of the 'Emerald Isle" went out of their class for players, having inveigled into their midst several who used to phy in tbe first nine. Tbe game up to the fourth inning was an excellent one, both teams doing good work.

The ride from Manhattan to this place occupies about five hours. Some of us well remember when it took a much longer time for the trip. The road is lined on either sitle with attractive looking farms; and fields of corn and wheat till all the valley from bluff to bluff. Corn predominates eastward of Abilene, anil thence nearly to Brookville the quantity of wheat gradually gains ou the corn. Thence through tbe Marker bills to Kanopolia grazing seems to be the chief industry.

At Kanopolin the prominent object in view is the great building of the salt company, and the smoking chimney Indicates activity. (We have looked in vain, however, for a statement of the product of this plant among tho usual county statistics.) We are over the hills now, and fully in the valley of the Smoky Hill again, which was left not far from Salina, and, four miles beyond Kanopolis we reach Ellsworth the county seat of the county of the same name both presumably commemorating Col. Ellsworth whose life was sacrificed at Alexandria, Va in tbe early part of tbe war of secession. Wheat, in almost endless quantity, oc. enpies the wide horizon from this on, and seemingly not half of it is threshed, but the work is progressing.

At one point tbe smoke of four steam threshers was visible in tbe distance. At Russell, the county sett of the next county west of Ellsworth, there was such an appearance of liveliness that it would seem in order to change tha spelling of the name to "Rustle." The earliest wheat was being marketed at about SO cents, and many teams were engaged in hauling it. Already the plow is turning the land for the crop of 18118 From Kussell it is 40 mi'es to this place, and we rise iu transit. 201 feet, reaching an altitude here of 2,050 feet, hut all along the way is wheal; and, thouiih little is in sight from this station, yet the loads coming iu froji the north and south indicate a ciop of larue dimensions in tbe county. As this Is the main division ou tbe Kansas 1'ncitlc, it is a town of considerable importance.

Tbe location is ou Big creek about midvay between the Saline river on lite north and tho Smoky Hill on the south. The Union 1'ueilio hotel, managed by II. T. I'enuy, is enclosed In a park witli fountains and appliances that make it a very attractive place. The breeze that sweeps over these wide and treeless uplands, comes laden wilh ozone that invigorates and even exhilarates those who are fortunate euoiuli to inhale it.

One of our party, a long time Kansau, too, seems as enthusiastic over these breezes us anv tenderfoot could be. He frequently remarked on the happy condition as he tilled his lungs with this abundant oiune. He taught us in thu practical way that we Kansaus do not put enough store iu our delightful climate but let California, lur ns to a less healthful locality. It will be well fur us to stand up for Kansas in this matter of climate, for in healthl'iilness it cannot be excelled. With the aid of a good team, ami in compauionsliip of ihree, one of hom was familiar with tbe whole country traversed, we yesterday made a forty mile ride to ami over the lands of the Smoky Uiver Zinc Mining Company, itis company has property whereon is an immense deposit ol ore, the assays of which have demonstrated its richness beyond a doubt.

The ore is nc-cesNible, and tbe vustiicss of tbesupply bus been settled by the binking ot a shaft to tbe dcpih of 200 fuel. 'J posit is found iu hold sides of the Smoky Mill river, mid within 12 miles of a railroad, so that it is not hard tu market the product. This tlip was made to examine the region, uutl aeltle by perfonul inspection the question of the presence of tl. ore of which so much has been said nf late. The result was that all agreed tli til 1 quantity of available material was inexhaustible.

Wc have since heard that the -nin-pitny's alls for operating have been perfected, Rinl the requisite machinery will lie put in at once, There is no kooiI reason why central Kansas may not produce zinc uhnndaiit as does the southeastern Jiaitof the stale.
