It is almost ready for operation now, and the Webster peo pie believe they will have gasoline for sale here by next Monday.

The fact that they did not handle gasoline has handicapped the Wedster people here )nslderably. In fact, this Is the only thing that has compelled many Emporia merchants to handle Standard products at all. They had to depend oi the Standard for gasoline, and most of the merchants did not like to buy all their oil from the independent people and then depend on the Standard for their gasoline. They were even afraid that if they threw the Standard over in the oil business, the Standard would refuse to sell them gasoline. Gut now they will be In a position tc give the Standard the chilly stare.

Gazette. About a year ago some of the Reading merchants thought to leave the Standard, and began buying Webster oil. A Standard representative came here ana politely aod plainly told our meictunts that Standard gasoline was the only kiad to be had, and if they didn't handle Standard gasoline, they couldn't handle Standard oil. M. Miller was renominated for the fifth time as congressman from this the Fourth district at the convention held in Emporia Wednesday afternoon. Strong resolutions were adopted and Congressman Miller was advised to vote and work for the ad mission of Oklahoma and Indian Territory as a state regardless of the admission of any other state. J. Evans Of Hartford is the new Lyon county congressional committeeman. While in Emporia Saturday the writer saw Pejry Hayes preparing to ship his tool chest to Garden City. He said carpenter work was slow in Emporia now and was brisk at Garden City. Perry will return to Emporia when things begin to liven up there. Hubbard Co. Mile Posts Being Renumbered. The Santa Fe is renumbering the mile posts from Chicago to the coast. When this is completed the part of the line from Emporia through Tope-ka to Holiday will be known as the Atchison branch, and what iR now known as the 'cutoff', from Emporia through Ottawa to Holiday, will be the main line. Also, when this renumbering is complete a passenger on a through Santa Fe passenger train, going from Chicago to the Pacific coast, will not hear among the stations called by the trainmen, the name of either cf the towns represent, in this great system's name, Atcnison.Topeka and Santa Fe, Atchison has been on a branch line for years, so has Santa Fe, N.

and now Topeka is on a branch. Frank Potter and family visited in Reading a few days last week with Cad Lawrence and family. They have been living in Oklahoma but will make their future home in Topeka. Bert Jacoby and family were up from Emporia a few days last week to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Plumb, and thecommitte-man is L. B. Sheldon. Since our last issue Kansas has bad a visit from King Winter and the mercury was forced slowly down the tube until Monday morning it stood at 10 above zero. Rain and snow was the order Friday and Saturday, the latter freezing as fast as it fell.

The river was frozen over, from bank to bank in one night, Sunday night. It has been rain, sleet and snow all weed with the thermometer at about 20 above zero. The boys have enjoyed skating on the sidewalks. This has been the hardest week on stock of the winter. The coal man and the ice man are the only ones who wear a smile, for it really looks as an ice crop would be harvested.

Later As we go to press the weather is moderating and the ice crop prospects are gone glimmering. There is an epidemic of pneumonia at Hartford, and the doctors thare have been forced to sand to Emporia for aid. In a family named Zimmerman, there are seven cases of pneumonia. The Zimmermans had just moved to Hartford, and had not yet unpacked their household goods when they were taken sick, and the father died. Gazette.

Reading Camp No. 1765 M. W. A. initiated another candidate last Saturday night.

This order has taken in several new members during the past few months. They are considering a proposition to build a hall and will have special meeting Saturday night to discuss It. At a meeting of the Lyon county Democratic central committee Saturday afternoon, the date for the county convention was set for April 7, at 10 o'clock. The country primaries will be held March 24th and the city pri maries March 30. The freight rate on furniture, car load lots has been reduced from 57c to 27c, from river points to Emporia.
